I must say that I’m more invested in the success of the incoming Doerkson government than I’ve been in any goverment in nearly a decade. What interests me most is the potential fecundity of the premier-elect’s back-to-basics, normie conservatism. Doerkson isn’t offering political dopamine. His whole pitch is about competent government, economic growth, and public institutions that fulfill their basic purposes. The magnitude of his victory is a sign of how broadly that proposition can appeal. The story, in a nutshell, is a guy from Williams Lake offered a recognizable conservatism that could win in Vancouver-Yaletown. His temperament helped bring together rural communities, suburban families, and urban voters around some straightforward expectations about how their province should work. Schools should teach. The justice system should protect the public. Hospitals should treat patients. The civil service should deliver services competently and impartially. These institutions have important yet bounded missions. They should discharge them effectively and resist the temptation to become vehicles for every passing political or ideological cause. The same practical instinct should guide economic policy: make it possible to build homes, grow businesses, develop resources, and attract investment. Give people reasons to believe that hard work and initiative can produce a better life here. This is the politics of normalcy in practice. And even if its rhetoric is moderate, its ambitions are considerable. Restoring focus and competence to institutions that have lost them will require conviction, persistence, and capable people. That’s another reason for optimism: the quality of the candidates and potential front bench, along with the talented people Doerkson’s leadership drew to the campaign. @gavindew is someone to watch in particular. His interest in both economic growth and making government more productive—including through AI—could make him an important contributor to this governing agenda. The test now is governing. There will be hard choices and inevitable disappointments along the way. But this is a conservatism that I want to see succeed—and an unusually promising opportunity to show what it can accomplish.

Thank you, British Columbia. Tonight, you voted for change. You voted for a government that will listen, keep life affordable, and never take your hard-earned money for granted. I want to thank every volunteer who knocked on doors, made calls, and put up signs in the rain. I want to thank our candidates, who stepped forward in a snap election with no time to spare. And I want to thank my wife Shelley and my family for standing beside me every step of the way. To those who didn’t vote for us: I will work just as hard for you. This is your government too. The work starts now. Let’s get to it.

I’m trying to imagine how extreme you must be to believe that people like Erin O’Toole and Scott Aitchison are scary right-wing bogeymen.
Erin O'Toole, famous for campaigning on privatizing healthcare, endorses Brad Bradford who is campaigning on handing over your water to Doug Ford for privatization. Also - did he leave "Brad Bradford can't be trusted" uncrossed because he knows it can't be denied?

I'm shocked - SHOCKED - that the top separatist leader believes that Albertans' mail-in ballots were part of a rigged process and federalist conspiracy. Who could have seen this coming from a guy who propagates conspiracy theories about: - Chem trails - Vaccines - Shadowy globalist forces controlling Canada - King Charles' plan to assassinate him - Chinese Communist soldiers staging in Canada (because he saw six ethnically Chinese men at the West Edmonton Mall) - Canadian politicians personally receiving $ hundreds of millions in illegal kickbacks from vaccine companies, foreign aid, etc. - Mass illegal organ harvesting in Canada, etc.. Hard to believe that such a person would be sceptical about the democratic process.
lmao -- Mitch Sylvestre says he both accepts and doesn't accept the results of the referendum, pointing to the mysterious and always nefarious mail-in ballot numbers

Myriam was a 7-year-old French Jewish girl. She witnessed a terrorist break into her school and kill two of her classmates. She tried to run but tripped while grabbing her schoolbag, causing her ballet slippers to fall out. She stopped to pick them up. He chased her and grabbed her by the hair, shooting her in the head at point-blank range. The man was Mohamed Merah, and a rap song honoring him and other Muslim terrorists has become the unofficial anthem of the ‘student protests’ in France.
Alarmingly, the PBO reports interest is the fastest-growing expense. That’s largely because the debt is growing at twice the rate of deficits - because off-budget accounting. Interest costs are projected to eat up $83.0 billion by 2030‑31, 13.6¢ of every tax dollar. #cdnpoli

Close to sixty percent of the French economy is government spending. All else aside, the idea that burning down beautiful buildings in Limoges is the understandable consequence of “ruling class” disinterest is self-indulgent bullshit.

A lot of people are responding to this by saying that the French government should just use force to put down the riots, but I don't think it's realistic and I want to explain why. Before you get angry at me and accuse me of being a pussy, you should know that I personally think a building such as Limoges's town hall is worth more than most human beings and certainly more than the brainless thugs who burnt it down, but it doesn't matter what I think. We have let things rot for so long that, at this point, relying primarily on force to restore order would require a degree of violence far greater than what people realize and what is politically feasible. It's possible to contain a riot using only moderate force when the number of police officers is high relative to the number of rioters, but when riots are so widespread and involve so many people because you have allowed this kind of things to happen for so long, that's just not possible and you have to use extreme violence to make up for the lack of manpower. I know people on the Internet will say that it doesn't matter and that we should just do it, but the reality is that most of the people in charge are not prepared to use that kind of force and neither would most ordinary people if they saw videos of 16-year-old kids having their brains blown out by cops. I doubt even Le Pen would do that and, if she tried, she would quickly backtrack because of the backlash it would inevitably generate. When you start shooting rioters after years or even decades of letting them run amok with impunity, it will initially result in even more violence, because repression is no longer credible and they will assume that you will cave in the face of the outrage. So it's not enough to shoot people once, you have to keep doing it until your credibility is restored and nobody will even want to test your resolve anymore, which in turn means that you have to kill a lot of people. And you have to be confident that, as you do that, your subordinates and political allies won't get cold feet and desert you because they anticipate that you'll lose and will not want to be on the losing side, giving rise to a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm sorry but that's just not going to happen. The Soviet hardliners didn't have the stomach for this kind of carnage in 1991, which is why the August coup failed almost immediately, so frankly the idea that French elites in 2027 will is just delusional. As I say below, there are things we can and should do, but we have our work cut out for us and it will take a long time.
As usual, people are looking for deep reasons, but I think there isn't any for the most part and the real explanation is much more boring. There is a very high level of general dissatisfaction in France at the moment, mostly due to anemic economic growth and inflation, especially with the price of gas. In addition, Macron has been in power for almost 10 years and is very unpopular, which only adds to general dissatisfaction. The high school protests, although they were already fizzling out, have provided motivation for the left by fueling the hope that it could ride out that wave to energize its own protests. So there was a fertile ground for protests, which are pretty common in France after summer. Still, while the protests were large, they were hardly impressive by French standards. What set them apart from traditional French social movements is how violent they were. Contrary to popular mythology, French protests are not generally violent. France has a very strong protest and strike culture, but the meme about how we riots all the time is overdone. Traditionally, protests are traditionally organized by unions, which coordinate with the authorities beforehand and have a security service that takes care of troublemakers during the protest. This is why the violence always starts toward the end of the protests, after the official demonstration has disbanded and people begin to scatter, because that's when it's harder for the police to control the situation. Protests have increasingly led to violence in recent years because they have become more spontaneous and are more often organized by people on social media, but also and relatedly because increasingly far-left groups and children of immigrants opportunistically join them to cause mayhem and loot. I keep seeing a lot of people who are depicting those kids as "Islamists" and ideologically motivated actors, but I think it's a complete misreading of the situation in my opinion. This isn't an "Islamist uprising" or whatever nonsense people are talking about. Their actions are opportunistic and driven by a nihilistic culture that is very similar to what you see in Black ghettos in the US, where anti-social behavior is totally normalized, with an added Islamic veneer due to their family background. This nihilism and their family background makes them susceptible to Islamist indoctrination, which is why terrorists were almost always delinquent before they turned to religion, but most of them aren't ideologues and those who are don't loot stores. As I explained before, the police often don't intervene because they are overwhelmed and they have instructions from the government not to, because politicians are terrified that if they do a kid will be killed and they will have full-blown race riots on their hands. So what they do instead is contain the violence geographically and arrest the most violent participants later at home, when the risk that the cops will kill one of them is low, using video/photo evidence. Eventually things will fizzle out, in part because the violence will discredit the movement and actually make it easier for the government to deal with it, but this tactic is very costly since we are effectively accepting that every now and then far-left activists and immigrant thugs will just burn and loot while the police watch. The problem from the government's point of view is that, if they use repression by telling the cops to break skulls, they will kill some of the kids and this will result in a massive backlash, leading to more protests and probably even more violence. I think we need to hand out serious prison time to protesters who are caught engaging in violence to deter this kind of shit, but the government has a very limited ability to do so, because justice is independent, courts are full of left-wing judges who refuse to do that, they are already overwhelmed with cases, prisons are full and we are broke. So there isn't one single explanation, it's just a combination of factors, including random stuff that nobody could predict. The context explains why something like that *can* happen, but it doesn't explain why it happens when it does. Again it's probably random for the most part. It would take years to solve the problem even if we started now, which we won't because our politics is completely broken, because it would require getting our budget in order, implementing reasonable economic policies, fixing our immigration and justice system, etc. We are cooked to be honest.

I heard some folks are wondering how I ended up being named Brad Bradford. Let’s talk about it

BC doesn't have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem. The NDP has shown itself to be fiscally irresponsible at best, incompetent at worst. Eby's so-called "millionaire's tax" doesn't start at $1M — it starts at $190,405, which will impact doctors, dentists, engineers, and the other professionals BC is already struggling to attract and retain. The new tax is expected to raise $1B a year, which sounds like a lot, until you realize it will barely make a dent in Eby’s record-setting $13.8B deficit We can't tax our way out of this scale of fiscal mismanagement. It's time for change in BC.
Gordon Campbell had the dot com recession, 9/11 and the 2008 financial collapse. And BC was still prospering. Horgan had Covid recession but came out pretty unscathed. Now look at Eby? lol that’s wild and some of you are out here defending him!? 😂 If he was a man of honour he would step down as he’s clearly out of his element. Regardless he doesn’t deserve your vote. Power hungry typical politician. BC’s left wing base and voters have lost the plot. We need smarter folks from that end of the political spectrum or we’re in for a painful decade. And no the Greens are not even remotely a solution. They’re currently just a bunch of class warfare types who hate anyone that’s built a life of success.
