Thank god we can find and intercept lost hikers as they mistakenly run away from rescue in dense forest!
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

Just learned about Masked Bannerfish which have little horns on their heads! Kind of reminds me of a couple species of Lebanese pycnodonts.

Some extinct animals with kinked upper jaw (wanted to say subnarial gap but I don't think that's accurate for some of 'em).

It started with Ray Troll’s “Sharkabet” but I also found a copy of his “Planet Ocean” at a young age and between the depictions of incomprehensibly bizarre animals and their dream like arrangements, I was hooked. Cursed to ponder the highs and lows of the life aquatic.
Starting this up again! Name a piece of paleoart that had a large impact on you. This piece, by Douglas Henderson, showing a Rutiodon startling some Fadrosaurus, lives rent free in my head. The masterful use of light and dark totally stunned me as a child.

Atop the bleached dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico lie the 40-centimeter footprints of a now-extinct giant ground sloth that roamed more than 11,500 years ago. Within those tracks, researchers noticed little human footprints—remnants of an ancient playground. Learn more on #InternationalSlothDay: scim.ag/3WfmsI1
