Pope Leo XIV: "There is no such thing as a Holy War: only peace is holy." Marking the 40th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace held in Assisi led by Pope John Paul II with the leaders of world religions, cults and sects, Pope Leo XIV says: "Dear brothers and sisters, You are gathered in Assisi forty years after the World Day of Prayer for Peace held on 27 October 1986.  That event was initiated by Saint John Paul II, who on that occasion emphasized the intrinsic bond between a genuine religious attitude and a keen sense of peace. I extend my cordial greetings to the Patriarchs and religious leaders, many of whom have actively taken part in the various days of prayer and dialogue that have been held over the years.  I also warmly greet His Excellency Felice Accrocca, Bishop of Assisi, the Franciscan Families and all those in attendance.  I would very much like to have been with you at the tomb of Saint Francis on this important anniversary, to see your faces and bear witness together to the fact that living as brothers and sisters is already possible! I thank the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and the Community of Sant’Egidio for their commitment to continuing along the path laid out by my predecessors.  I am heartened by the long and faithful journey made over these years, which has borne much fruit.  Pope Francis said of that unforgettable day in October 1986: "It should not and could not have remained an isolated event.  You have continued on this path and have increased its momentum." Indeed, following that first historic meeting, Saint John Paul II called for us to “continue to live the spirit of Assisi” (Address to Leaders of the World Religions in Assisi, 26 October 1986).  That was at the time of the Cold War, a very different situation from the one we face today.  After 1989, many believed that globalization would ensure lasting peace for the world.  Unfortunately, as I wrote in Magnifica Humanitas, “an almost blind faith was placed in the ability of the markets to generate prosperity, democracy and stability. In reality, rather than automatically generating unity and peace, globalization has provoked fundamentalist, identity-based and nationalistic reactions.” Against this backdrop, there has been “troubling revival of war as an instrument of international politics.” As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “the accumulation of arms strikes many as a paradoxically suitable way of deterring potential adversaries from war. They see it as the most effective means of ensuring peace among nations,” thus betraying the memory of the twentieth century and the senseless slaughter of millions of human lives.  Precisely in these times marked by a “culture of power,” there is a need to cultivate the spirit of Assisi, which entails a rejection of the religious justification of war, a spirit of mediation and dialogue, and contemplative reflection combined with creative action in the service of a future of peace.  Yes, peace must once again become the common ideal of all peoples, the guiding star for all our choices, the standard that exposes injustice, and the shared horizon for all. We must rebuild peace everywhere, not prepare for more wars.  War can never be waged in the name of God.  For us believers, to fight in the name of religion means attacking religion itself. There is no such thing as a holy war: only peace is holy. That is why the journey begun in Assisi as a shared quest for peace is, first and foremost, the path of prayer.  Prayer may seem weak in the face of the powers of the world, but it is the humble strength of believers.  Let us turn to God, the giver of peace, that he may touch the hearts of those who seek war and terrorism.  Let us not forget that prayer is never in vain. Indeed, prayer is a school of dialogue with God, with people and with all creatures. Let us think of Saint Francis, whose death we have commemorated on his eight-hundredth anniversary.”

It’s actually crazy how you grow up thinking home-cooked meals every day are just normal, then get older and realise how much time and effort it took your Mom to make that happen and how lucky you were to have that.

Eyewitness to the Israeli settler attack on Palestinians and @washingtonpost photographer Heidi Levine tells me, “It was barbaric…there were maybe 5 or 6 surrounding her. They had clubs…And they were standing over her, beating her over and over, it was truly horrific. I was worried that she was going to be killed.” - @infinite_jaz

Russia's summer offensive failed. Ukraine was turning the tide. Putin persuaded Trump to help stop them
#Starlink works perfectly at 180km/h + in #Poland. In #Ukraine no such luck. Anything over 160km looses signal. So it’s not a technical glitch. It’s someone’s concrete decision. Unsurprisingly it comes when Ukraine armed forces were advancing on the frontlines

The IDF provided cover, with tear gas and machine guns, while the settlers beat @washingtonpost journalist Heidi Levine nearly to death. Then the IDF shot a Palestinian bystander, and aimed their guns and shoved the paramedics who were trying to treat him. All of this documented.
Earlier today, IDF and Israel Border Police forces were dispatched to an area adjacent to Khirbet Abu Falah, following a report of a violent confrontation. Foreign media personnel were present at the scene and a female journalist was injured during the confrontation. All details of the incident will be examined. Upon arriving to the scene, the forces acted to disperse the confrontation using riot dispersal means. At another location where the confrontation took place, IDF soldiers initially fired warning shots into the air and then fired toward a suspect who ran toward them, carrying a sharp object and posed a threat to them. The confrontation was dispersed. Israeli Police forces and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District will enter the area with IDF security to collect findings and evidence, as well as take testimonies. Violence against innocent civilians is a grave and intolerable phenomenon that requires a coordinated, multi-agency response. The IDF will work together with the relevant authorities to eradicate this phenomenon. The IDF strongly condemns this incident. Attempts to incite friction between populations undermine security in the area.

Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population." He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory." "They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this." He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

CNN has done like 48 hours straight of negative attacks on Abdul. I've never seen anything like it. The Ellison's purchase is paying off immediately
.@Jesse_Leg on Abdul El-Sayed's base problem in Michigan: “For a lot of people, a lot of the Black voters in Michigan, a lot of the Jewish voters in Michigan, loyal constituencies of the Democratic Party who have been hesitant to get behind Abdul El-Sayed because he is an extreme radical candidate, have been hesitant because Abdul El-Sayed is a very different kind of Democrat. He’s on Fox News in the last few days, refusing to note that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization in Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon, and saying that even though the U.S. recognized them as such, he’s not willing to go that far. In the same time period, Mike Rogers is down in Detroit in a Black church...”
