Look at the track record of the three reporters on the byline, @jongambrellAP , @summer_said , and @salehalbatati, and it is easy to see why. ​Start with Summer Said in Dubai. Her reliance on anonymous sources got so out of hand in October 2024 that OPEC's Secretariat publicly called out her oil report for inventing a meeting that never took place. That was followed in 2025 and 2026 by official denials of her security leaks from Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait, on top of years spent amplifying activist Omar Abdulaziz. ​On the ground, Middle East Eye contributor Saleh al-Batati has spent months settling scores for Southern Transitional Council factions against Riyadh and Yemen's recognized government ever since Aidarous al-Zubaidi was sacked and investigated for treason in January 2026. And Jon Gambrell, hired by the Journal in September 2026 after years pushing Citizen Lab stories at the AP, has already embarrassed his new editors. He repeated bogus Houthi claims about downing a Saudi F-15 and striking Riyadh based on deceptive footage that even Reuters had to walk back. ​The Houthis overthrew Yemen's legitimate government, starved the country, attacked Red Sea shipping, and walked away from every peace deal on the table. Turning their psychological warfare and local factional grudges into straight reporting is a major failure of editorial oversight at the Journal.
