When you imprison girls in their homes, you imprison the future of an entire nation. Afghanistan cannot prosper while half its population is denied the freedom to learn, work and lead.

At the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, I reaffirmed Afghanistan’s unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms. There must be no distinction between “good” and “bad” terrorists.
I emphasized four key points:
• All those who shelter, finance or support terrorist groups, including the Taliban must be held accountable.
• We strongly condemn Pakistan’s airstrikes in Kunar and Helmand, which, according to UNAMA, killed at least 10 civilians, most of them children.
• Counterterrorism cannot justify unlawful attacks, disregard for civilian lives or violations of Afghanistan’s territorial integrity.
• Lasting security requires legitimate, inclusive and accountable governance, respect for women’s and girls’ rights, and coordinated international support for an Afghan-led political process.

Yesterday, after 12 years of waiting, the remains of 25 Yazidis killed in the genocide were returned to their families.
My brother, Heji Murad Basee, was among them. We finally had the chance to say goodbye. We continue to wait for our other family members to be identified and returned.
Counting down the days for The Vanishing Girl of Kabul event in D.C.! Really looking forward to meeting these great colleagues. @ZahraJoya @Amie_FR

For five years, this 25-year-old teacher has secretly been teaching girls in Afghanistan, risking detention by the Taliban — or worse — to keep their education alive. Her own education was cut short when the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and her university closed. With her future suddenly uncertain and every door seeming to close, she says there was no hope left. Weeks later, she started teaching in secret.
