How much CO2 does a blast furnace emit? How much more carbon does a blast furnace pump out over its extended lifespan when relined?
The new Blast Furnace Emissions Calculator from @SteelWatch2030 puts the impacts of relining decisions into context, helping estimate how much a unit, plant, or company might emit under different relining scenarios.
Eliminating coal from steelmaking is a critical challenge, but many steelmakers continue to reline blast furnaces, extending their lives by decades and locking in long-term emissions.
This calculator shows the long-term risks of extending the lives of blast furnaces, underlining the responsibility every company has to phase them out in favour of near-zero-emissions technologies.

Congratulations to communities in Louisiana who organized through the @SierraClub to pressure @Hyundai to swap polluting equipment for electric alternatives.
We still want to see Hyundai commit to using green hydrogen as soon as possible at their planned Louisiana steel mill, but this news shows that the company is beginning to listen to and engage with community concerns around air quality.

The #FIFAWorld Cup passed through Monterrey, where local communities are demanding that FIFA sponsor Hyundai take action on air quality in the heavily pollution-burdened city.
Hyundai sources steel for its supply chain from Ternium, whose pollution has been linked to deaths and public health issues. Local organizers played a match to reclaim the beautiful game from Hyundai’s sportswashing, and hosted a panel on the impacts of Termium and Hyundai’s pollution on local communities.

Civil society groups around the world are united today in calling on @Hyundai to “ take responsibility for the impacts its business has on people and the planet, and to match its climate commitments with meaningful action.”
Organizations including @ActSpeaksLouder, @Eko_Movement, @FairSteel, @GreenpeaceEAsia, @StandMighty, Networks for Green Transport, PLAN1.5,, @Public_Citizen, @SierraClub and @forourclimate signed onto a letter asking Hyundai to:
1️⃣ Commit publicly to a clear, time-bound phase-out plan of internal combustion engine vehicles in all global markets and accelerate your transition to 100% electric vehicle sales by 2030.
2️⃣ Clean up your supply chain by upholding human rights and environmental standards at every stage—from critical mineral sourcing to manufacturing emissions, including carbon-intensive materials such as steel—while ensuring benefits for workers and affected communities.
3️⃣ Ensure that your World Cup partnership reflects genuine climate leadership, not greenwashing, through transparent, independently verified emissions targets and measurable progress toward meeting them.
Hyundai can and should do more to address human rights and environmental issues in its supply chain. The alternative is to continue to face reputational damage from activists across the globe.
