On the one hand, American officials encourage Europeans to build up their own military forces; at the same time, they promote parties and leaders who oppose defense spending, favor Russia, or want to break European solidarity

Everyone is focused on Poland’s constitutional crisis, but this is larger than that. It is also about the future of the EU.
President Karol Nawrocki has refused to swear in multiple Constitutional Tribunal judges duly elected by parliament. Polish law requires the oath before the president for them to take office. The Venice Commission has advised that the president’s role is essentially ceremonial, he does not have a free hand to review or block parliamentary choices, and prolonged refusal should not prevent judges from assuming their posts. Combined with the tribunal’s PiS-aligned leadership (itself the product of earlier contested appointments) blocking the new judges, the court has been effectively paralyzed. The recent suspension of the tribunal’s president, police deployment, protests, and Nawrocki’s mid-flight return from Senegal are the latest escalation in a decade-long fight over the judiciary’s legitimacy.
This is not a “coup by Tusk,” as many try to portray it. The previous PiS governments’ overhaul of the courts was widely criticized by EU institutions and the Venice Commission for undermining independence. Tusk’s government is trying to reverse that, often forcefully and sometimes controversially. Nawrocki’s systematic refusal to complete judicial appointments continues the institutional gridlock. Both sides have politicized the courts, but the current blockage of constitutional functions falls primarily on the president’s refusal to perform a core duty.
Pro-Kremlin voices are exploiting the chaos to shift blame entirely onto the government and float Polexit. That narrative is convenient for anyone who wants a weaker, more isolated Poland. Leaving the EU would be an economic and security catastrophe, the overwhelming majority of Polish exports go to the single market, EU funds have underpinned infrastructure and growth, free movement benefits millions of Poles, and collective defense coordination is critical while Russia wages war next door and conducts hybrid operations against Polish targets. Analyses point to multi-percent GDP losses, disrupted supply chains, lost investment, higher costs, and reduced international influence. Polish foreign policy figures have correctly called Polexit a gift to the Kremlin. The EU clearly has flaws and overreaches, and debates are legitimate, but unilateral exit would leave Poland poorer, less secure, and more vulnerable precisely when the Russian threat is acute.
The real priority should be restoring a functioning constitutional order without further institutional destruction, while keeping Poland firmly in the EU and NATO framework that has delivered security and prosperity. Infighting that weakens the state and serves only those who want a divided Europe.
Honestly, Polexit would be a self-inflicted wound Poland can least afford. The EU is imperfect, over-regulated, slow, and sometimes tone-deaf to national concerns, but leaving would reverse two decades of progress and leave the country more vulnerable to the neighbor that has repeatedly shown what happens to weaker states on its periphery.
Poland’s economy has roughly doubled in real terms since joining in 2004. Studies estimate it is around 40% richer because of membership, driven by free access to a market of nearly 450 million consumers, foreign investment, and structural funds that modernized infrastructure and raised productivity.
More than 70% of Polish exports go to the EU. Barriers, tariffs, and lost investor confidence would hit manufacturers, agri-food producers, and the supply chains supporting millions of jobs. Net transfers have been strongly positive, the idea that Poland is a “net payer” is a myth.
Social costs would compound the economic ones. Free movement has given Poles the ability to work, study, and do business across the continent. New border controls and restricted rights would shrink opportunities for younger generations and isolate businesses. Rural and industrial regions that have used cohesion funds for roads, broadband, and modernization would feel the contraction first. Lower growth means weaker public finances and less capacity to fund defense, healthcare, or pensions.
Security is the sharpest edge. Poland sits on NATO’s and the EU’s eastern flank, with an active Russian war of aggression next door. Membership multiplies diplomatic weight, defense cooperation, and access to collective resources. An isolated Poland would face greater hybrid pressure, energy leverage, and political subversion with fewer allies willing or able to help. This is why Russian assets in Polish politics and media promote Polexit, and Russian-linked networks and disinformation campaigns have amplified the messaging through social media. The goal is not Polish prosperity or sovereignty, but a weaker, more divided Europe.
Poles can and should press for changes inside the Union on migration, energy, agricultural rules, or institutional balance. Reform is possible from within, isolation is not. Leaving would trade imperfect European leverage for permanent exposure to an imperialistic power that treats neighborly weakness as an opportunity. Poland’s interest is to stay and shape the European project, not abandon it.

The recent Starlink / Starshield incident in Ukraine has created a dangerous precedence for the US export industry, many haven't yet grasped. The sudden deactivation respectively curtailing of those systems without warning not only cost precious lives, but also equipment worth millions.
Though the blame game between the White House (Trump) and SpaceX (Musk) is going on, ultimately it doesn't matter. It showed the world that the USA are not a reliable partner any more. Pointing at some obscure "violation of terms of services" without providing the exact passage are just increasing that notion that this was a political move.
The explanation that Starlink must not be used for "offensive" means is nonsense, too. Starlink has never been turned on over Russia, and using it in Ukraine is by definition defensive in nature. You can even argue that hitting Russian targets in Russia is defensive, since you don't have to wait for an attack to be conducted. Even the intention is enough to warrant action and to eliminate the threat at the source. But this is a different topic.
Furthermore, SpaceX has been fully aware that its Starlink terminals are being used by Ukrainian forces. Especially when considering that Ukraine only recently had to white-list their Starlink terminals for the Ukrainian military so that Russian forces, who have been abundantly using Starlink as well, were locked out. It has always been clear that those Starlink terminals are used for and by the Ukrainian military, and Ukraine has always been thankful for that.
Coming up with this bogus story, now, three weeks before midterms is therefore as transparent as it is shameless. It is obvious for everyone that this was just figleaf statement so that a political agenda can be pushed, an agenda which runs counter to the strategic nationalist interests of the USA, both political and economic.
And this is the real scandal. It is not new that the US had to lock out its technology or supplies to nations with which it had previously good and even cordial relation. Iran under the Shah, South-Vietnam and Cuba before Castro are just three to name it. But as you can see from them, it made perfectly sense back then. Those nations switched sides or disappeared altogether.
Ukraine on the other hand didn't switch sides and even helped the US in the most recent and botched Iran war, despite being short on ammunition itself. The Ukrainian government accepted every possible compromise and offered an unconditional ceasefire from the start. Russia on the hand refused all of it and is demanding surrender. Yet, it gets this treatment? Unbelievable.
This will be noted by all clients around the globe who purchase US weapons and technology. If agreements are not honored and can unilaterally and even clandestinely be altered based on the whims of a few, who only follow their own motives or election lies, then the all concept reliability falls apart.
Whether it is Starlink, the F-35, Tomahawk missiles or HIMARS. All those systems run on software and in many cases can only properly operate with recent updates. You don't even need have a kill switch. You can only refuse to update and many of those systems lose more than 90% of their effectiveness within a short period, making worthless.
This is why we see the blame game between Musk and Trump. I'm sure that people around those guys told them how absolutely shortsighted and stupid this step was. It will fall back on the entire US industry. Not even those two guys are worth that losses and backlash. A functional US Congress would immediately start subpoenas and hearings, asking questions in order to mitigate the damage, but here we are.
Trump and Musk have given the best reason why not to buy American. Customers - governmental and private alike - around the globe will take note of this and act accordingly, and I wouldn't be surprised if this won't be limited to US military products only. An absolutely senseless and avoidable own goal.
