On October 27, 2019, a little grey foal was facing immediate peril after his mother ROSES FOR DEB died during birth.
By some miraculous intervention, a nearby mare named SHIGERU SENDAN gave birth to another colt by the same stallion, MERCHANT NAVY, within a 24-hour window of ROSES FOR DEB passing.
Thanks to the swift action of the team at Fernrigg Farm, the little grey foal, affectionately named ‘RONNIE’, was introduced to SHIGERU SENDAN and the foster mother accepted him as one of her own, raising both colts to become successful racehorses, known as NAVAL TRADER (Ronnie) and PIRAEUS.
Last year at the races in Brisbane, we were able to reunite the brothers for the first time in 5 years and safe to say they recognised each other!
We reflect on this remarkable story as we have retired NAVAL TRADER from racing. He has been placed in the expert care of one of his former track riders Bec Young!

Seeing 19yo DESCARADO at @FernriggFarm last week brought back a flood of great memories
When I first arrived to work with @GaiWaterhouse1 at Tulloch Lodge in 2010, Descarado was a recent tried horse purchase from NZ with the help of @RobWaterhouse
Racing in the @RacingHenderson @LukeHenderson1 🍫 with⚪️ epaulettes, he placed in the Gr1 AJC Derby in the first few weeks after my arrival. He went on to win a Caulfield Cup & Caulfield Stakes for a great group of owners & provided so much fun and a bit of carry on 😀
It was great to see him dappled up & looking a picture of health some 15 years later. I also enjoyed looking at him from a mechanics pov, with more experience under my belt. The best horses teach you the most. Enjoy this 🎥 footage:
