‘Designer baby’ start-ups test limits of biotech taboo per FT US-based Bootstrap Bio and Manhattan Genomics both ceased operating within the past year, the former after failing to raise further funding and the latter following a dispute between its founders. Neither published a scientific breakthrough. Yet money continues to move into the field. Preventive, a San Francisco-based embryo-editing start-up, raised nearly $30 mn last year from investors, including OpenAI chief Sam Altman and his husband as well as Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. Nucleus Genomics, backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, is funding further academic research into germline gene editing — where the DNA in egg cells, sperm cells or embryos is edited — with the goal of eventually offering the technology commercially. The companies are pursuing ways to alter DNA in human embryos, initially with the stated aim of preventing genetic disease. Some proponents also envisage using the technology to influence traits such as intelligence.

France’s government spends more of its GDP than the Soviet Union did in 1989 The riots in France are not just about immigration. Immigration is only one part of the issue; the other is the welfare state, as David Friedberg brilliantly explains in this video.

Unitree chief says humanoid AI's 'ChatGPT moment' arriving in 1-2 yrs The accelerating development of artificial intelligence globally is triggering a new round of debate on whether a "ChatGPT moment" for humanoid intelligence is approaching rapidly, said the top executive of Chinese humanoid robot maker Unitree Robotics. Wang Xingxing, founder and chairman of the Hangzhou, Zhejiang province-based firm, made a fresh judgment on the "ChatGPT moment" for embodied intelligence by asserting it is arriving faster than previously thought, possibly in just a year or two. During the opening ceremony of the 26th China International Industry Fair held between Oct 12-16 in Shanghai, Wang admitted that his biggest mistake over the past decade or so was "not believing in AI enough".

Here’s something wild: the same technology that helps you write an email is also helping scientists discover new proteins, predict diseases earlier, and speed up drug research. AI isn’t just a productivity trick. It’s becoming a tool for solving some of humanity’s hardest problems. Every week brings a breakthrough that would have sounded like science fiction not long ago.

Apparently there is crazy demand for the new IPhone Duo from $AAPL , as expected some would say
Apple’s, $AAPL, new iPhone Duo sold out almost immediately, per Bloomberg. Initial pre-order inventory was gone within minutes, and estimated delivery dates have slipped from Oct. 23 to Nov. 16–23. That’s a different picture from earlier this month, when Apple reportedly told some suppliers to cut production of parts for its new iPhone line over soft demand.

The machines will take over science October 6th 2026 may be remembered as the biggest day in the history of mathematics. OpenAI, an American frontier lab, released more than 700 academic papers claiming progress or solutions for 372 problems that had baffled scholars for decades. Mathematicians are still struggling to digest what it means for their discipline. The implications promise to go far beyond maths. It is time to grapple with how artificial intelligence (AI) will affect science as a whole. The maths results are, simultaneously, a leap forward for humanity; a marvel that underscores the breakneck progress of AI; and a warning of a future in which understanding of the universe could belong to machines that are impenetrable to human minds. The question is how to achieve progress without sacrificing understanding.

Anthropic assigned highest junk credit rating in June per FT Anthropic was assigned a credit rating one notch below investment grade by Kroll Bond Rating Agency this year, marking a strong grade for the AI start-up despite its limited financial disclosures. The Claude maker received an issuer rating of double B plus from KBRA in June, the highest speculative-grade score, in the run-up to securing a $35 bn chip financing led by Apollo, according to documents seen by the FT. The rating action, which has not previously been reported, shows Anthropic is close to achieving the investment-grade status that would allow the start-up to lower its borrowing costs and tap a wider pool of institutional investors including life insurance companies and pension funds.

$MSFT on Monday unveiled the Maia 300, its third-generation AI chip. According to Microsoft, the new chip will be optimized to handle the latest reasoning AI models and agents, which should result in lower operating costs. “We expect Maia 300 to deliver 40% more tokens per megawatt compared to leading GPU-based systems,” said Scott Guthrie, Microsoft’s executive vice president for cloud and AI, in a blog post. The chip’s predecessor, the Maia 200, was launched in January and now supports Microsoft Copilot workloads, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry to follow by the end of 2026, the company said. Microsoft plans to deploy the Maia 300 after the turn of the year.
