Bike Lanes Are White Lanes seems like a great book. I just ordered one!
It’s about the racist impacts of urban planning for bike infrastructure, and how affluent white bike bros turned something seemingly good into a weapon for gentrification and displacement.
The author is even a cyclist who supports bike infrastructure.

RENEWABLES ABUNDANCE IN TEXAS IS LOWERING PRICES! WIND, SOLAR, AND BATTERIES TO THE RESCUE! ...
That's what you hear from countless analysts fixated on promoting liberalized power markets as climate politics. Yes, wholesale "all-in" energy prices at ERCOT are falling in the past few years; yes, it's remarkable how much wind and solar is on the grid; and yes, it's cool that batteries are being deployed too.
But among all the cheerleading of competition and wholesale price signals, people are losing sight of the downstream retail prices that households pay. Not just that, these cheerleaders have, over the past few decades, made everyone forget that public utility regulation is a century-old institution for regulating profits and prices (and service quality) in the electricity sector.
Most recently, @ieefa_institute, the staunchly antinuclear global green think tank, put out a quarterly newsletter highlighting the "record-smashing summer" in ERCOT, the grid area for most of Texas and America's foremost example of electricity liberalization. In chart after chart, they show how their particularly constructed wholesale price metrics for summer months have declined between 2023 and 2026. The average daily peak day-ahead energy price in summer months has plummeted from its 2023 peak! Tell the people!
"Combined with dispatchable battery storage, renewables are not only providing power to the grid but also helping the whole system do so at low and stable prices." IEEFA declares. "Texas continues to show that a reliable and economic transition away from fossil fuels is happening."
But what about the actual *retail* prices that households pay in the ERCOT part of Texas? Unfortunately, from 2019 to 2025, the latest available data, households have been paying *more* for their power. Businesses, on the other hand, with their far higher capacity for playing the market, have indeed reaped the benefit of the tightening wholesale power prices. Good for them.
In this part of Texas, electricity is sold at retail by retail energy providers (REPs), which pass on the delivery costs (distribution + transmission) from the "wires" utilities. The delivery charges have indeed slightly increased, particularly the distribution part but also the transmission part -- all that open transmission network ain't free.
But the retail energy charges have increased too, despite the wholesale energy prices falling. That's because the retailers are paying the cost of hedging on behalf of their customers. They're also eating god knows what markup; we don't know what their profit is because their prices aren't set according to rate regulation by the state public utilities commission.
Meanwhile, if you're in one of the *public power* territories, like Austin, San Antonio, and various other towns and rural counties -- where the utility charges you the cost of service, without profit, for the whole stack -- your retail price has stayed flatter. Indeed the residential price gap between competitive private power territories and public power ones has increased in recent years.
"Renewables go up! Batteries go wild! It's the cheapest power imaginable!" So why are Texans paying more?
Maybe it's time the public interest in electricity brings back some of those old-fashioned concerns about cost of service regulation of retail prices and profits, rather than cheerleading the perfect neoliberal wholesale markets that businesses, not households, benefit most from.
Man guys we really are winning in the housing discourse. Like people know our correct talking points now. #YIMBY
Christianity’s global spread was marked by colonialism, forced conversions, destruction of Indigenous cultures and religious persecution.
International Religious Freedom Day should celebrate the freedom to believe or not believe, not the spread of Christianity.

The *vast* majority of the American public does not support mass deportations for migrants who have no criminal record. These people work and pay taxes and have families here.
People on X can yell and scream about it, but they fact is they're out of touch with most people.
Of the 63 people on a July 30th deportation flight to Africa, 60 Minutes found that 19% had been charged with or convicted of crimes, including theft, assault, drug offenses and weapons possession. The remaining 81% had either traffic violations or no criminal record at all.
In response, Department of Homeland Security lawyer James Percival said: “This administration is following the law that Congress has passed. There are a lot of people in this population that we talk about who committed very serious crimes. And people should be very happy with President Trump for getting these serious criminals out of the country.” cbsn.ws/4ihmFF3

Epic.
A suspect has been arrested in Germany following a fire at Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat, known as Eagle's Nest, German police said.
Authorities were alerted to a fire at the Nazi leader's mountain residence on the peak of Obersalzberg at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday, Upper Bavaria South police said in a statement.
The building, also known as Kehlsteinhaus, was "completely engulfed in flames" when firefighters arrived, police said, but no one was found inside and no injuries were reported.
Remember, we should not argue over big and small nuclear reactors. The more nuclear we can do the better. Different sizes have different applications. Realize that the worst type of nuclear reactor is the one not being built!
Awesome! More potential American citizens that can supercharge our economy.

Announcing Prosperity One: a proposed 6.6 gigawatt nuclear campus in Lewis County, Kentucky
Anonymous submission:
Last week, a group of activists disabled the OMNY readers at the BQ Church Avenue station in Brooklyn with an automatic center punch and drill. They opened the gate so people can ride for free, and painted the cameras to protect themselves and fellow riders from surveillance.
This was deliberate act of protest against unaffordable transit, hyper-surveillance in predominantly Black and brown neighborhoods, and the MTA's collaboration with the military industrial complex.
YOU ARE BEING WATCHED. OMNY records when and where you travel, your photograph, name, DOB, billing address, and other personal details. This invasive tech creates a profile to track your life and travel patterns. OMNY’s privacy policy places no limits on the data it collects about you.
EVERY TAP FUNDS A WAR PROFITEER. OMNY is operated by Cubic, a military equipment company making combat simulators. They sell the F-35 fighter jet training system to imperialist zionist entities like israel. The F-35 is a key weapon in israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, and all of the US's imperialist wars, responsible for massacring millions of people.
FIGHT BACK. The MTA and Cubic don't deserve your hard earned cash. Take action, smash a reader, jump the turnstile, hold the gate for others. If you must pay, use cash for OMNY cards, and tap yourself and fellow riders in. This makes you all less traceable. Cover your face and identifying features. Always check for police before evading the fare. Remember, contracted security guards have no authority to stop or detain passengers.
RIDE FREE, FUCK THE NYPD, AND FREE PALESTINE!
