U.S. national primate research centers face an uncertain future. The U.S. has been disinvesting in primate research, which is indispensable for translating brain and mental health discoveries into treatments for people. Mouse neurology is great for discovery using an amazing methodological quiver, but it's hard to scale the insights, technologies, and treatments to humans. Unfortunately, we face stiff competition from other countries. “China’s already been eating our lunch; they’re going to eat our dinner, too,” says Michael Platt, university professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. China’s investment could lead to new vaccines and treatments and cures for brain disorders—but “it’s not clear that you get to share in the fruits of those discoveries.” The U.S. must step up and fund this vital national resource. thetransmitter.org/what-if-n…

Excited to share my lab’s latest preprint led by postdoc @YukiHaba_ and grad student Ryan Schwark. We surprisingly find that spontaneous behavior in isolation predicts a naked mole-rat’s identity, its colony membership, and even rank within its colony. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Illusionism is a terrible name for it. Nobody is saying your experience isn't happening — they're saying it isn't what it advertises itself as. The Partially Examined Life · Ep. 399: Dan Dennett’s Model of Mind (Part Two)

🚨🧠📄 @biorxivpreprint: L5 ACC engages dlPAG to facilitate affective pain First, map opioid+ pain ACC neurons: nature.com/articles/s41586-0… Next, ID endogenous opioid control across the PAG: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article… Now, we link the ACC→dlPAG circuit: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

7/8 ACC activity also tracked spontaneous pain-directed behaviors as they unfolded That brings us closer to the ongoing affective-motivational experience of chronic pain

Cover! Check out the paper here: cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S08…
New issue of Neuron online! The cover features work from Matthew Banghart, Lin Tian, and colleagues, who cleverly "trick" mice into producing a placebo-like anesthesia effect. They show placebo anesthesia uses similar circuits and molecules as morphine. cell.com/neuron/current
