Earnest take: I think it’s probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don’t live in.

5 things heterodox-critical people say that if you’re a heterodoxer should IMMEDIATELY mean you never listen to them about their thoughts on you because they clearly have no idea what they’re talking about

Gaza (about 4% killed) is about the same or higher than a number of recognized genocides, including Bangladesh and al-Anfal. It's also much higher than the Rohingya Genocide. For some reason you guys think the IDF killing 1/25 Gazans in two years is exonerating. But it's much higher than the rate of attrition for any population in a war zone this century. Compare to Ukraine (or Eastern Ukraine), Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, etc. Gaza is off the charts. If you include deaths, maimed people, and orphans as casualties it's something like 1/8 Gazans.
Unless you’re kidnapping all of the children and sterilizing all of the adults to destroy the culture of the group affected, you need a minimum percentage of people killed. As a general matter, a minimum percentage dead is a necessary but not sufficient condition for genocide.

It makes me happy that I am probably the amalgamation Nick Land hates. From my ethnic background, philosophical positions, political views, and aesthetics, I am the anti Nick Land.
Everyone knows Somalis are a pestilence from hell. If they defend them, they just hate the societies they're being inflicted upon. Absolutely without exception.

Well, a lot of them just seem to be proposing the replacement of money with Schmoney, firms with schfirms, prices with schprices, profit and loss with schprofit and schloss, and a “central agency” that emulates 90% of market production functions but adds a few caveats, e.g. removing the presence of managers… not very impressive stuff.

Very sad to hear. In 2020-2021 when I first started to seriously engage with political economy, his work was some of the first stuff I came across. Even though I was way over my head mathematically, I took a lot away from it. He also had serious aura.
Sad news. Today, we lost one of the greatest thinkers of political economy. Rest in peace Anwar Shaikh.

Now you can buy "Otto Neurath in Britain" cheaply as a paperback! if you are hesitating why to do that, here is a review from Ivan F. da Cunha in Metascience! I am grateful for that! link.springer.com/article/10… amazon.com/Otto-Neurath-Brit…

The substantive points in the article aregood, but the Pinker glaze makes it a hard read, since his bad reasoning isn't unique to the domain of AI. Steven Pinker's "status" as America's top public intellectual really shows how worthless a concept the "public intellectual" is.
Scott Alexander has replied to Steven Pinker. He makes some good point as you'd expect, especially on the capability of the models. I was less convinced when he tried to explain why LLMs would become power seeking. He also calls me a 'culture warrior' & 'lowest quality voice' in the debate. astralcodexten.com/p/an-open…

If you're interested in understanding the literature studying minimum wage effects on jobs, I encourage you to look at our work on the own-wage elasticity (OWE). It is, indeed, a thick literature, and most studies suggest effects that are either positive or a small negative, where magnitudes are economically interpretable.
“The good news is we have a thick literature on the topic at this point.” The thick literature:

The idea that "popular narrative" on minimum wages "turns out to be wrong" because it's not paid attention to "replication" is just wrong. There are tons of replications in minimum wage research. And not just replication, but new research that extends the analysis. Just because a one team wants to critique a paper doesn't make it a "replication failure." The good news is we have a thick literature on the topic at this point. And that body of research strongly shows that to date, minimum wages have raised wages without causing much change in employment.
So much of popular narrative (China, minimum wages, climate damage, inequality) turns out to be wrong. Yet economics and politics doesn't pay much attention to replication. Honestly wrong. Authors can do their best and still end up with wrong results. But a "scientific" profession and polity should pay attention to replication.

My opponent is justified in believing that ~p iff he can defend it against every skeptical challenge by invoking only indubitable self-evident truths that entail ~p. I'm justified in believing that p if I unreflectively formed my belief on the basis of a youtube video I liked.

It’s a nice joke, but it’s just that, a joke. Ignoring the Keynesians who disagreed with Monetarist insights entirely, it’s a weird sort of monetarism that believes money demand isn’t sufficiently stable to base policy on monetary aggregates (and the best policy isn’t a fixed

He was smeared by people who never read the book. His supporting evidence was all mainstream. Over ninety scientists signed a letter supporting him. His predictions have been borne out. In this house Charles Murray is a hero. End of discussion.
