On this day in 1957, women's colleges at Oxford were finally accorded equal rights with the men's colleges. Yes, you read that correctly. 1957. First, though, a little history of Oxbridge’s long march (or perhaps that should be “sleepy stroll”) towards equality for women; mainly Ox-, it has to be said, with a dash of -bridge. In 1869, Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon founded Girton College Cambridge, the first residential university college for women, with just five students. Newnham College followed two year later. Women’s colleges were not recognised by the University of Cambridge, nor were women awarded degrees even though their exams were just as rigorous. Instead, they received a Certificate of Proficiency which makes it sound as though they’d passed a basic cycling road safety test. Oxford lagged behind but Lady Margaret Hall opened in 1878 with nine students followed by Somerville in 1879 with twelve. You know the drill. They were not recognised by the University of Oxford either and they were not awarded degrees despite sitting the same exams as their male peers. Even so, a series of invisible tariffs were imposed that applied only to women. Women students had to be chaperoned if male students were present. They were allowed to sit the notoriously difficult Mathematical Tripos exams at Cambridge but their embarrassingly good results were, erm, glossed over. Philippa Garrett Fawcett, daughter of Millicent, was the first woman to obtain the top score in the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos exams. She knocked spots off the male second place candidate with a score a full 13% higher than his but was not awarded the much prized title of Senior Wrangler. Heaven forfend that a woman should beat a man. He was awarded HER title instead. Philippa was simply described as “above Senior Wrangler”. These days, Parkrun is doing its bit by letting men steal women’s records. Between 1904 and 1907, the Steamboat Ladies (women denied degrees at Oxbridge even though they met all of the requirements) - including Philippa - had to sail to Trinity College Dublin to be awarded an ad eundem degree, an academic degree awarded on the grounds of mutual recognition or equivalence. Trinity expected a handful of women to take up the offer. Over 720 did. On 7 October 1920, there was a step-change. Women could be awarded degrees at Oxford. Cambridge held out until 1928. In 1925, Somerville was granted its charter and the requirement for women to be chaperoned in the presence of male students was abolished but a curfew was put in place instead. You might ask which sensitive souls were these restrictions meant to protect? Well, eleven years earlier, the Head of Somerville had had to write to her female students about “a very tiresome complaint that the men examinees are disturbed by the way our students sit in their tight skirts and show their legs.” I’ve attached an illustration of those short tight skirts so you can see just how easily distracted those poor chaps were. It’s the 1st Rule of Misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do. In 1927, a limitation statute was introduced to limit the admission of those pesky women (by now qualifying for higher education in ever greater numbers) to no more than 840 students - roughly 15% of the undergraduate body. Do you know what that reminds me of? The decision to limit the vote in 1918 to women aged 30 or over who met an additional property qualification. WW1 had just concluded with a terrible loss of life and the government was frightened that female voters would far outnumber male voters if the vote was granted to them on equal terms with men. 21 years later - 1948 - the limitation statute was raised to 970. Probably because WW2 had just concluded with another terrible loss of life and universities were worried about their income. Convince me otherwise. Another nine years went by before the female quota was finally abolished, thirty years after it was first introduced. On 27 April 1948, women were admitted to full membership of the University of Cambridge, and Girton College received the status of a college of the university. 1959 brought another step-change. The five women’s colleges at Oxford (now including St Hilda’s, St Hugh’s and St Anne’s) finally received the same ‘full status’ as the men’s colleges, and their Heads became eligible to become Vice-Chancellor. At long last in 1961, Dame Lucy Sutherland (1903-1980) of Australia became the first woman Pro-Vice-Chancellor. That’s 92 years or about five generations of women at Oxbridge openly disadvantaged on the basis of their sex, but the woman who set the ball rolling was Emily Davies - and that’s where we started. In 1859, she made this vow to her friends, the Garrett sisters: “Women can get nowhere unless they are as well educated as men. I shall open the universities.” She kept her promise. So did they. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson vowed to open the doors for women doctors and Millicent Garrett Fawcett promised to achieve votes for women. Today, 57% of students enrolled in higher education are women but only 17% of vice-chancellors are female and the proportion of male staff on senior higher education contracts is almost three times higher than it is for female staff. Remember that the next time a university pats itself on the back for its commitment to inclusion.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is an MP in Somalia THIS WEEK defending the mutilation of little girls because it benefits men. I am running out of words for the sheer inhumanity of these men. And the female politician laughing behind him should be ashamed. But that would require a conscience. Around 99% of Somali women and girls have undergone #FGM, yet politicians openly defend this horrific abuse. And what do we do? Keep pouring billions into Somalia while pretending it is building a functioning state. Why are British taxpayers funding institutions whose politicians show such contempt for little girls? Not another penny without accountability. I am sick of this madness.

This week in during online @FreedomProgramm group, the focus was on The Sexual Controller — exploring sexually abusive and controlling behaviours, the tactics used, and how living with them over time can break down a person’s confidence, autonomy and sense of safety. For some families, the period before a parent goes to prison has been characterised by fear, instability, coercion and abuse within the family home. And imprisonment does not necessarily bring that abuse to an end. Control and abuse can continue from a prison cell. Recent @MoJGovUK data found that 53% of children identified with a parent in prison were recorded as being at risk of harm from that parent. That is why support for the parent or carer who remains at home matters too. The Freedom Programme group provides a space to understand what has happened, recognise patterns of abusive behaviour and begin recovery. Supporting a parent or carer to rebuild safety, confidence and control in their own life can help create the conditions for recovery across the whole family.

You know - if you have to give men a leaflet to tell them how not to rape women - they probably shouldn’t be here.

A trainee police officer in Manchester has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and rape. A woman made a 999 call from his car! Imagine the distress she was in but also the courage it took to call 999 in the middle of it. She must have been fearing for her life. Think of how he might have been policing women before he was arrested. Other women may need to come forward and @gmpolice should be publicly inviting that.

Sharia law is evil.
Islamic Republic in Iran hangs 24-Year-old woman who defended herself from sexual assault Yesterday the regime executed Marziyeh Neyri yesterday, a young woman who was forced into marriage at age 17 and hanged for fighting back against her attacker. Marziyeh was 18 years old when her husband's associate attempted to sexually assault her in her own home, in front of her husband. She grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself. Her husband died in the struggle. She told the court she had been repeatedly assaulted by her husband's associates before that day. Iran's courts didn't care. The regime rejected her self-defense claim. Her attacker, who survived, took the stand and called her a murderer. The court believed him over her. She was sentenced to death. No clemency. No mercy. The sentence was carried out at Chubindar Prison in Qazvin. Marziyeh Neyri never had a chance. Forced into marriage as a child under Iran's Islamic laws, she spent the few years of her adult life in a courtroom, fighting for her life after defending it. She lost. This is the Sharia Laws in Islamic Republic of Iran where a woman can be hanged for surviving. 💔

I’m a gay man and a psychiatrist. I’ve watched the explosion of rapid-onset gender dysphoria cases, especially in teenage girls. I’ve seen the desistance data, the comorbidities, the regret, and the sterilizing effects of blockers + cross-sex hormones. And I have never supported medicalizing children. Not once. Never. Kids cannot consent to infertility, loss of sexual function, or permanent alteration of healthy bodies. “Affirmation” is not neutral care — it is an ideological intervention that locks many of them onto a medical pathway most would have grown out of. Being gay does not require me to pretend that sex is a spectrum or that a distressed 13-year-old girl is actually a boy. It requires the opposite: protecting same-sex attracted and gender-nonconforming kids from a medical fad that pathologizes them. I will not shut up.

Pakistani government ministers need to understand something - people who criticise the state of Pakistan aren’t the same as vile Pakistani men who gang rape little girls. I mean - most of us can tell the difference. Pakistan are demanding to be able to extradite from Britain men who criticise Pakistan in exchange for taking back their child rapists. This is not an exchange. It’s reducing the right of girls to be free of rape to a bargaining chip and it’s vile. express.co.uk/news/uk/222658…

I was the Appropriate Adult in this case. Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC will always be a HERO to me and all victims of child sexual abuse! A judge just refused to jail a girl who stabbed her abuser. Then he offered to pay her fine himself. In 2016, a 15-year-old girl appeared before Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC at Bradford Crown Court, charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. She had stabbed 56-year-old Zabhullah Boota, the man who sexually assaulted her when she was eight. At 14, she went to his home and stabbed him near the heart. He survived after intensive care. The judge refused to imprison her, saying it would be "a disgrace to send a survivor like you to prison." She received a two-year Youth Rehabilitation Order. He also offered to personally pay the mandatory court surcharge — a move that later earned him a formal misconduct finding. The case hit a nerve because her abuser had been convicted in 2010 but walked free with only a community order. The story originally broke in 2016 and has resurfaced multiple times since.

Many such cases
Stephen Ireland, who targeted me with endless abuse on here because I oppose the chemical castration of children and the removal of protected spaces for women and girls, has just been sentenced to 30 years in jail for child rape.

If you block someone and ask them to desist from their obsessive tweeting about you, monitoring of your movements online and off, but they do not stop and instead continue obsessively monitoring you and mentioning you, it is without doubt a police matter. It would be fascinating watching someone seemingly unable to stop themselves, if it wasn’t so worrying.
