My husband made me my very own Criterion closet. This is romance. 💜

Years ago I read Stacy Schiff's "The Witches," and was struck by its descriptions of the quietude of colonial America. EYES OF FIRE really captures that eerie sense of isolation as colonists forge into an unknown wilderness, encountering ancient terrors.

There's something to be said about colonists refusing to heed warnings and pushing past boundaries into death and destruction brought about by their own hubris.

Yet its indelible sense of the haunting isolation of the colonial era wilderness is what I found most compelling. It's easy to see how so much folklore sprung from these mysterious and ancient places. Really great stuff here.

Like no, I'm not going to step aside and get out of your way when you're coming out the entrance. There's an exit right there! I'm where I'm supposed to be, you're the one making it weird.

It amazes me how many people seem to go through life completely unaware that there is a world of other people around them.

This world is also completely separate from their own priorities and motivations and this seems to blow their minds.

You can't dislike a movie on here that's even mildly popular, because you'll inevitably get a bunch of angry replies from randos calling you "contrarian."

These people think their taste is objective and can't imagine anyone having a different reaction to a piece of art, so they insist everyone like the things they like. Any deviation is seen as a kind of cultural heresy, with pop culture as the new religion.

Y’all are not hating this man hard enough if you are still giving him nights in your theaters and pages on your websites.

They are shy, awkward people who can barely form a coherent sentence around each other. When they're apart, their relationship grows through letters. They become a symbol of home to each other when the idea of home seems lost.

Minghella had such a knack for zeroing in on the human element even on the grandest possible canvasses. I think he gets unfairly written off for making "Oscar bait," but he was a tremendous craftsman and observer of the human condition.

Decided to throw on one of my comfort films last night and watch COLD MOUNTAIN, and I was struck this time by how the space between two lonely people takes center stage against the epic backdrop, as people cling to a small kernel of hope even as the world collapses around them.

It is sometimes criticized for the seeming lack of chemistry between the two leads, but I consider that a feature, not a bug. The film is more about what these two represent to each other than it is about an actual romance.
