SMB and ETA folk know that at the end of the day it is the numbers that matter the most! Searchers and past buyers know that understanding the numbers of a deal is essential to picking the right business, raising the right capital, and managing all of the available funds.
It can be daunting to go down that road alone, which is where @SMB_ash comes in. If you choose to attend the searcher track, we always have panels lined up to help you understand the numbers!
2024 hosted @JermanMichael from @Hollywellteam to discuss accounting. Then Ben from @Slackwatercap, @cappaert from Workbench Capital and Blue Maple, & @bibelhausen from @FruitionCap and Heritage Fabrics shared the stage to discuss the ins and outs of Investor Equity from their personal experiences!
I don't know what you're thinking - but that's a heck of a lot of experience in just two out of our twenty separate panels (8 specific to searching).
Having a team of people, a mentor, or insight from experienced entrepreneurs (😉 by attending SMBash) increases your comprehension of the unique numbers framework of each deal. And when it comes to SMB and ETA, knowledge leads to success.

Harvard MBA’s are turning down $300K salaries from prestigious Private Equity Firms to go buy “boring” blue-collar businesses in rural America.
Here's the irony:
Anyone with an average IQ and a strong work ethic can do this.
So why not you?

5 Major SMB Milestones:
1) ~100K Revenue is when you feel like you might be onto something and could really make a living at this.
2) ~500K Revenue is when you start to switch from feeling like you're self-employed to really a small business and you realize how important hiring right is.
3) ~1M Revenue is when you realize you have to learn how to lead leaders and not just hire low-level people to do tasks you don't want to do if you don't want to be stuck at this level forever. Making a decent living but you're tired and biz depends on you still to perform well. (only ~5% of SMBs ever hit this)
4) ~500K Earnings is where you finally feel like you have some breathing room and can take vacations, invest, live the lifestyle you promised your spouse during the years of sacrifice, and have to decide if you want to reinvent yourself and go to the next level or stay comfy here.
5) ~1M+ Earnings is where you've really committed to doing "CEO stuff" most of the time and start thinking you could position yourself for a "set for life" exit, or reinvent yourself again and get a capital partner and go huge. Buyers are knocking down your door and want to dance.
Each step can be difficult, but a case could be made they get progressively easier as you go.
Buying a Business let's you skip the first 3 or 4 (arguably hardest) steps and if step 5 is a potential work-your-way within a decade to "set for life" financially, Entrepreneurship through Acquisition is one of the greatest wealth hacks on the planet.
It's not easy! But it allows you to focus on mastering the highest value set of skills further up the success ladder.

After lurking on SMBTwit, I’d like to introduce myself: “Turncoat Search Fund Guy”
I did a traditional search fund in 2017, bought in 2018, sold in 2022
2 mo ago, I turned my back on the SF model, signed a PG, and bought an SMB

PPP Data is a goldmine for a small business buyer - I shouldn't be telling you this...
In less than 10 minutes, I found 95 'Flooring Contractors' in Texas, estimated their revenue & EBITDA based on their PPP loan data
6 steps:
1. Get PPP Payroll data for the specific NAICS industry code & geography into a spreadsheet
2. Calculate annual payroll (PPP loan is 2.5 months of payroll)
3. Estimate what payroll is as a % of revenue (this will be industry and biz)
4. Estimate annual revenue
5. Get estimated EBITDA (using your estimate of EBITDA margins typical for this biz)
6. Refine your list further by filtering by your minimum EBITDA threshold
