Future Earth Australia is now the official member of the Belmont Forum. 🌏
🌏 Unlocking Opportunities for Australian Researchers: Belmont Forum Membership Renewal Future Earth Australia has taken the helm as Australia’s representative on the esteemed Belmont Forum—an international organisation committed to funding environmental and sustainability initiatives. Dr Jemma Purandare, co-chair of Future Earth Australia, describes this strategic partnership as a long-awaited milestone. Together, both organisations will drive progress in sustainability. What’s in it for Australian researchers? Membership in the Belmont Forum opens doors to a dynamic global network, fostering transdisciplinary collaborations and amplifying research impact. Established in 2009, the Forum mobilises funding for transdisciplinary projects, breaking down critical barriers to sustainability. To date, it has committed A$382 million across 177 projects, with an average of A$13 million per collaborative research call and A$1.26 million per funded project. Environmental protection and a Net Zero future are crucial steps towards sustainability in the Australian Government's National Science and Research Priorities. As outlined in the Academy of Science's response, Future Earth Australia supports the need for an implementation plan
The Australian Government's National Science and Research Priorities support the aim to leverage science and research for economic growth, job creation, and national security. However, as our full response notes, previous efforts in this area have fallen short due to a lack of implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. We urge the government to also deliver an implementation plan to drive action across government portfolios, industry and the research sector. Read our full response: science.org.au/news-and-even…
