Normally I don't post about my personal connection to any one tragedy but this is different. I want everyone to know how much @AzizAlghashian means/meant to so many. I think he gave every one of us the sense that he was our special, singular friend, he cracked us all up...
It's absolutely impossible to believe that @AzizAlghashian, a dear friend and a beloved colleague is gone. Aziz took part in @ROPESorg summits in Baku and Bucharest, and joined our network out of belief that peace is the only way to live in the Middle East. We laughed and cried, and dreamt about different future.
He had a great sense of humor, he was a gentle soul, he used to be a great researcher and it's crazy that I'm writing about him in past tense.
We authored an op-ed together with @nivine_S of ALLMEP about our shared vision for peace. May it be his legacy.

"This resilience also reflects the UAE’s broader strategic role in the region. As one of Washington’s most dependable partners in the Gulf and a central logistical and economic hub linking the Middle East with Asia and Europe..." @GAfterman
What is really being tested in the war with Iran? Not only military power - but connectivity.
As the Middle East faces renewed conflict, the real test goes beyond the battlefield.
Airspace closures, maritime risks, and disrupted trade routes are already affecting regional and global supply chains.
This crisis highlights a deeper question:
which economic and logistical networks can continue to function under pressure - and which will not?
Countries like the UAE show how resilient infrastructure can sustain connectivity even in times of instability. At the same time, initiatives like IMEC reflect a broader shift toward diversified regional networks built to withstand shocks.
The key takeaway: The future regional order will depend not only on military outcomes - but on which systems of connectivity prove resilient enough to endure.

“If we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”
In a new article, Dr. Gedaliah Afterman, Research Fellow at Mitvim, and co-authors, examine how middle powers are increasingly turning to flexible cooperation frameworks - or “workarounding” - to navigate growing U.S.-China rivalry and a fragmenting global order.
The piece explores how cross-regional partnerships are creating new strategic space for middle powers, from trade and technology to critical minerals and supply chains, and what this trend means for the future of global governance.

Israel’s diplomatic isolation was on full display at the UN last week, and no amount of military force will change that. To reverse the trend, its partners in the Middle East urge Israel to work regionally to end the war in Gaza. New analysis by @GAfterman in the link below:
