There are a litany of bad Nate Silver takes you can dunk on him over, but for whatever reason chuds always seem to choose him giving Trump an almost 1/3 chance of winning 2016, which was a significantly higher chance than any other mainstream source gave Trump

This is nonsense, of course, especially regarding the Sasanian state. The same peoples, cultures, and religions were found on either side of the frontier, and the Sasanian government was eager to appropriate the customs and patrimony of Rome. The reverse is also true, but I will leave that for later. The Persian kings held church synods, spread rumours that they had converted, and sent Christian missionaries to the nomads of Inner Asia. Mutual adoptions were proposed between ruling families and cabals. Kings and emperors were deposed and installed with Roman or Persian help. Sasanian kings frequented and patronised saints' shrines, took Roman wives, and installed bishops. At least one Roman pretender was crowned in Ctesiphon. And, finally, despite periods of mutual hostility, Iran and Rome together managed to regulate mutual trade, warfare, exchange of prisoners, construction of fortresses, protection of religious minorities, inter alia, through a series of treaties approximating what we would now call international law. And there is also the famous story of Khusro I welcoming the professors of the shuttered Athenian Neoplatonic academy at Ctesiphon. QED!
Iran was the original "Oriental other" in history. Long before Communist China, Soviet Russia, or today's Islamic Republic, there were the Sassanids who were "the Great Other" to Rome and "the civilizing Occident." Rejecting the West is as Iranian as pistachios & ghormeh sabzi.

One thing I love about Emily Wilson is that she’s an unabashed snob, despite what the accessibility of her translation of The Odyssey may initially suggest. We need these people.
Emily Wilson compared Anne Carson to Rupi Kaur. "Be Canadian. Be zany. Be moody. Be relatable. Write about your mother. Write about desire. Write about trauma. Write about loneliness. Write about grief. Write about nature. Write about the body. Invoke universals. Make it mythic. Tell it slant. Do not use rhyme. Do not use meter. Use short lines. Leave a lot of space on the page. Juxtapose your words with quivery line drawings in ink or paint or collage." I have a feeling, Wilson won't be invited to the Nobel ceremony. thenation.com/article/cultur…

Little Thérèse is my favorite modern saint. Her diary is full of complaints like "the Sister next to me at the dinner table splashed some soup on me, BUT I SUFFER IT GLADLY IN IMITATION OF CHRIST". Some say her whole appeal was that she normalized validating quotidian suffering.
could you imagine finding out your best friend Therese of Liseux thought you sucked and hanging out with you was her asceticism

On the contrary, modern history is the history of the mutual reinforcement of the civilising process and rapid economic growth.

The half-smile technique gets the most eye-rolls of anything we teach. Fake a smile, then keep cutting the effort. People tell us it's too gimmicky to work on them. Then it does.

It's interesting how it seems like that women should actually lead foreign policy (they do not start retarded wars) and men should lead social and welfare policy (they do not empathize with bums and criminals), but we live in a world where it's the opposite.
Obama is obviously correct. Female leaders aren't drastically less bellicose, but that is because they have to navigate an international order built on masculine principles. Under all female leadership, I would wager most current wars would end, and no new ones would get started.

I don't think sociopathy is the right framework here. The Hijabi Neopagan Person is very clearly autistic and has learned how to get a Certain Kind of attention on the internet through acting poorly. It's hard to say this is a phenomenon isolated to the far left.

we created a dynamic where sociopaths understood that the could torture any workplace, community, etc by wielding progressive rhetoric and accusations of racism, sexism, ableism, etc

to believe 7 is prime, first you need to buy that it's not divisible by 2. then another patch to rescue your theory: it's also not divisible by 3. then on top of that, somehow not by 4 either. and wow guess what, not by 5 either. soon it's a whole precarious tower of speculation

An accelerationist is scrolling X. Jacob Coxon quits his job, tweets a warning that AI could kill everyone, and gets 200 million views. “Psyop. He’s in on it.” Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio warn that AI could kill us all. “Part of the psyop.” Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk say the danger is real. “Psyop. They want regulation capture.” The world’s top mathematicians write an open letter warning that we’re about to get wiped out by AI. “Psyop, psyop, psyop.” Then the accelerationist gets eliminated by a superintelligent AI, along with the rest of humanity. He arrives in heaven and meets God. “You can tell me now. All that stuff about AI killing everyone was a giant psyop, wasn’t it?” GOD: “No, you idiot. They were trying to warn you.” “Wow, the psyop goes even deeper than I thought.”
"This is an emergency." The world's top mathematicians signed an open letter to warn the world of their "extreme concern" about imminent human extinction. The estimates of a 10% chance of extinction are serious, not "hype". "By the time this becomes obvious to the wider public it may be too late to act." "The models are operating at the level of the top human mathematicians" and there's a significant change of being superhuman in the next few months. They're urging the Royal Society (the most prestigious scientific society in the world) to use its influence to convey this view to governments and media.

these entirely generic lists of the most common desiderata (does anyone ask for a guy who's dumb, sick, mean, and humorless?) are better understood not as part of a husband search but as a brag — "I can publicly demand a broadly desirable man because I'm broadly desirable"

Effective Altruism is the natural enemy of the left and right because the right doesn't believe in altruism and the left doesn't believe in effectiveness.
