NEW: Huge layoffs across McClatchy newspapers today, with some newsrooms gutted by a third. An internal email from management says consumer revenue has dipped 41% and "we cannot continue investing where subscriber interest does not support the investment"

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was arbitrarily detained on 27 December 2024 by the Israeli military when they raided Kamal Adwan hospital in Mashrou’ Beit Lahiya. Since then, he has been held without charges or trial, under orders that have been indefinitely renewed based on the Unlawful Combatants Law.
On 28 April 2026 an Israeli District Court approved the extension of Abu Safiya’s arbitrary detention under the Unlawful Combatant Law without filing any charges against him.
On 16 June 2026 Israel’s Supreme Court rejected Dr. Abu Safiya’s appeal for his immediate release, upholding the continuation of his arbitrary detention until at least October 2026.
Since 3 June 2026 Abu Safiya is held in solitary confinement exceeding the 15 consecutive days permitted under the Nelson Mandela Rules, which violates the prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment. Authorities are also denying him appropriate care for his health conditions.
@Amnesty is calling for his immediate release. The international community must apply maximum pressure on the Israeli authorities.

Christiane Amanpour’s interview with me about my new book ‘This is Also a Love Story’ will air today on CNN International and PBS. (I was extremely nervous but hopefully it all makes sense!) Thanks so much to her and her team for having me on.

My story for @noosphereapp.
Since May 1, police have encircled 1,000 rural workers on lands designated for the Maria da Glória agrarian reform settlement project by Brazil’s federal land reform agency. The situation is tense, with a risk of violence and “serious human rights violations,” according to federal prosecutors.
This video shows the moments before the arrest of three members of the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) on Tuesday, May 5, as they traveled in a convoy to deliver supplies to the area where rural workers are encamped.

WILD: After Pegasus scandal @nayibbukele's 🇸🇻El Salvador went hunting for...more spyware.
Destination: 🇷🇴#Romania
And "better than Pegasus" spyware delivered by clicks or ads for $10.9 million.
Cut-out: A vendor to El Salvador's election system that also took $1.3m in US Embassy contracts.
Shell Companies: Dubai shell company & Israeli broker tied to sanctioned #Intellexa (they make Predator)
Price was too steep, but sources said officials were still pursuing the spyware into 2025.
Big Picture: seems to me like #ElSalvador's conclusion after getting caught abusing Pegasus was: time to upgrade.
I wonder who actually makes this unnamed spyware?
🇪🇺EU & Romanian authorities should absolutely dig into what is going on here.

So much admiration for journalists in Lebanon, trying to cover the news and sometimes dying for it. Journalists should never be targets.
Our colleague Amal Khalil, a brave reporter who has been covering Israeli attacks on Lebanon for the past years was targeted along another colleague Zeinab Faraj while doing their job in south Lebanon. Emergency services succeeded in rescuing Zeinab with injuries along with two casualties. Amal is still under rubble, the Red Cross tried to get closer, yet another Israeli attack pushed them back.
