On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer warm congratulations to His Excellency President @PaulKagame and the government and people of Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix.
South Africa shares in the pride with which Rwanda is preparing to fly the chequered flag for our continent with the hosting of a globally prestigious event at the planned Bugesera circuit from the early 2030s.
This contract is a recognition of the capabilities of the Rwandan nation and of our continent more broadly.
As host of the first Grand Prix on African soil in 1993, and organiser of other major global events, South Africa will be happy to provide any support we may be invited to share.
The F1 African Grand Prix is another lustrous addition to Rwanda’s growing collection of top international events, including the UCI-classified Tour du Rwanda cycling race.
Congratulations, Rwanda.
You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights.

The Washington Agreement talks about neutralizing FDLR not “voluntary surrender.”
Secondly, surrendering to whom? How do you surrender to your ally?
Thirdly and most importantly, the public conduct of DRC govt officials - statements and appointments - shows a deeply shared ideology with the FDLR. Therefore, there is intensification rather than neutralization of the links between DRC govt and FDLR.
These are not conditions favorable for “voluntary surrender.”

Its a bit silly for Rwandan youth to drown into petty doomerism type of conversation and belief, bar this weird economy fluctuation there has never been a better time to be convinced of the trajectory the country is taking than today!!!

The AFC/M23, which is a Congolese movement, began withdrawing from the city of Uvira on 16 December 2025, and completed its withdrawal on 17 January 2026. The city was then retaken by the Congolese army (FARDC), its Burundian allies and its militias (FDLR and Wazalendo).
The US sanctions against the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) and four of its generals were taken on 2nd March 2026. Other US sanctions also followed.
It's therefore extremely difficult to justify the US sanctions against Rwanda by the refusal of the AFC/M23 to withdraw from Uvira.
Replying to @mperelman @FRANCE24
🇨🇩🇷🇼Trump envoy to Africa Massad Boulos @FRANCE24: "sanctions on Rwanda were direct result of the invasion of Uvira, just after the Washington deal. They were given a chance to withdraw, we were extremely patient but unfortunately had to sanction."

A statement alone will not answer those questions. Nor will Government acting alone. it requires a whole of society effort. That’s why it was so encouraging to have this frank and candid dialogue between young people, civil society, government leaders and Police.

Make no mistake, where the law has been broken, they will be held accountable. The dignity and safety of Rwandan women are non negotiable. A woman does not cease to deserve dignity because someone considers her clothes inappropriate. This speaks to mindset and our national values
