A friend asked for annual counts on fatal ODs, so I put this together. (2026 is Jan-July only).
As I was updating the 2026 numbers, I realized the Denver Medical Examiner's Office no longer includes 2018 and 2019 in their fatal overdose dashboard.*
A pity. Without that context, you'd think our fatals had always been this high. With it, you see the arrival of fentanyl on the streets and the impacts of state and local policy changes.
*Interestingly, 2018 and 2019 data are still available on the ME's dashboards for homicides, traffic fatalities, su---des, and homeless fatalities.
Just not those dead by drugs.
Why take off the 2018 and 2019 data?
Denver’s STAR program dispatches a behavioral health clinician and a paramedic to people on the street in crisis.
We know their budget. We know their operating hours. But we don’t know the results.
When Council gets briefed next Wednesday in the Safety Committee, perhaps a member will ask just what Denver gets for its investment. It’s a feel-good program on the surface, but does it work?
How many people are helped and how precisely? How do we measure the program’s effectiveness? (People not going to jail is an insufficient answer—are their behaviors changed?) Do frequent flyers receive intervention?
Denver Health gets a couple million. For what?
Servicios de la Raza’s STAR budget is bigger than the response team. Just what do they do? What are the results?

The irony of low barrier homeless shelters is about 80% of those who use shelters return to the streets anyway. The solution? Clean and sober homeless shelters complete with drug testing. San Francisco just opened it's first. It's full, with no drug use. How about that?
If you use drugs, you may not want to stay in a temporary homeless shelter because you can’t use drugs in them.
If you don’t use drugs, you may not want to stay in a temporary homeless shelter because people are using drugs in them.
A complaint from April about the Embarcadero Navigation Center:
"The client states the use (and sale) of drugs in the restrooms continues to be a problem for clients who do not wish to be exposed to potential violence or to the toxic fumes. The users have called him names and challenged him to “go outside.” Beyond this, he is asthmatic; thus, in practice he is unable to safely use the restrooms for long stretches, especially at night. Staff rarely intervene and then only halfheartedly. When he has brought this to the attention of the night staff, including the supervisor, they ignore or even make fun of him. It appears to him that some of them basically condone the use and sale of drugs on the shelter premises."

I think this is the last thing I'm going to say about this. I hope you read it. It's time for our country to touch the stove, and I'm not getting beaten over the head for trying to talk sense about it anymore.

My man, let's talk like grown ups.
I said what I said because I understand a bigger picture than the Right/Left, Dem/GOP/New Right conflict here in the United States. I'm not saying that kinetic warfare is never necessary. I support most of Israel's ventures in that regard and ours in Iran, for example. Sometimes it's necessary.
I'm just looking at a bigger chessboard than you. In a sense, you see a set of plays that's rook vs. bishop, and I see the queen ready to take you for it and establish checkmate.
We have global enemies. They are working with these factions internally. Those global enemies cannot strike us while we are strong and even halfway focused. They can the second we devote ourselves to killing each other.
A nation in civil war is a vulnerable nation. Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, New Axis generally, are all salivating at their one shot to crack the United States, and their best shot at it happens if we go to civil war, balkanize, or have a "national divorce" (that's balkanizing, actually).
What I said above, "War is losing," is a statement of THAT broader reality. It has virtually NOTHING to do with Left/Right/New Right or Dem/GOP internecine conflicts, however much the agitators inside our own country push us toward that doomsday. It has everything to do with the tigers outside our borders waiting to pounce in the very instant we screw this up.
The forces internally are pushing us to screw this up so those external forces can pounce. This strategy is an "inside-out" revolutionary strategy. It has cracked companies (like Uber) and forced a turnover of management. It can crack countries, including ours.
My statement isn't one of cowardice. In fact, given the shit I'm getting for it, and knew I'd get for it, it's the opposite. Do you have any idea how tiring it is to deal with you people who just don't get it and blame me for your own shortsightedness because you've been induced to be angry fools? It sucks, man, and I do it day after day after day after day.
So, maybe this walk through what I actually said helps you understand. I seriously doubt it. I have basically given up on stopping the coming planned conflict that's designed to take us out. You guys want to be mad too much and won't hold back against these blatant provocations anymore.
God bless and good luck. You need it. You have neither sense nor perspective to rely on in its place.
Denver City Council is considering a proposal to ban what it terms “algorithmic price fixing in rental housing.” 🧵
At issue is the adoption by multifamily rental operators of management software that uses members info to create aggregated data on market conditions. The system reduces the lag in pricing as markets conditions change. As more property owners adopt the software, the market intelligence is closer to real time pricing, lease terms can adjust to changes in supply or demand more quickly.
When Denver was supply constrained and high demand, prices went up in real time, faster for software users. In today’s market, as 4,000+ units came online and demand has slowed, prices are falling in real time.
Lewis and Kashman paint the tech as the modern equivalent of a smoke filled room, with mustache twirling villains screwing the little guy so they can surf piles of gold. Missing from their naughty landlord scenario and ordinance is:
▫️the recognition that the software provides intelligence on supply and demand, including *lowering* prices as markets change. Their single point of data came at Denver’s peak. Re-run the analysis today and the results would find the software generating an impact that decreases rent; and
▫️A Nov. 2025 settlement with RealPage and DOJ addressed key concerns (e.g., leasing data in the algo/pricing recommendations now must be at least 12 months old and more).
The proposed ordinance is economically illiterate slop and pretends the DOJ settlement doesn’t exist.
The provision giving tenants the private right to sue is a nightmare and will further distort Denver’s rental market and add another reason to the growing list making Denver a bad investment for multifamily operators.
Maybe that’s the point. At every turn, this Council seeks to make the private rental business more expensive and a risky investment.
Members of the Budget and Policy should reject this ill-conceived bill on Monday. FYI: Polis vetoed a similar bill in 2025.

I already see it on my Facebook feed from the midwits. They’re saying we don’t live in the “United” States, just the States, so you can tell it’s being floated up through the Chinese/Russian/Iranian bot farm du jour. These people are begging for a world that once it arrives, they’re really not gonna like it.

If you combine the mayor's program: "All In Mile High" and the Department of Housing Stability's budget since 2024, Denver has spent $680 million on "homelessness." I tried to warn Denver in 2023. They didn't listen. @shellenberger @DiscoveryCWP

The article said Denver reduced unsheltered homelessness 64% since 2023, but there was only 518 unsheltered homeless so Denver is celebrating moving 300 people total off the streets in three years? 100 people per year? How much did that cost? $300 million? @nytopinion

Colorado Taxpayers Paid $2 MILLION for a Political Campaign?! Loophole Allows Government Spending!!
Colorado voters have been bombarded with advertisements about this year’s election.
But most voters don’t know that taxpayers paid nearly $2 Million for ads and mailers that tie into ballot measure 7A!
Thankfully we have Natalie Menten @ColoEngaged who is helping to expose this egregious violation of the public trust.
In this video, Natalie explains that not only was this tax money spent on marketing, but to add insult to injury, taxpayers don’t even know how the money was spent without paying expensive fees!
This should be a massive scandal!
