Having spent decades advancing peace in Galkacyo, I know stability comes from undivided institutional authority - not parallel armed groups with split loyalties.
The rule of law is absolute: all forces on Puntland soil answer solely to Puntland’s constitutional command. Federal security engagement must follow agreed national architecture, not the political survival tactics of an expired mandate of a former Federal President.
Former statesmen should protect state institutions - not provide political cover for extra-legal armed elements under the guise of peace-building.

Somalia and the African Union have a very tight timeframe to determine how AUSSOM, the AU mission in Somalia, will continue or conclude.
It is important to be clear, though. Under the current circumstances, this is not about a successful transition but rather a dignified, managed exit. In this paper, @MustafeGaboobe and I outline what a managed transition would require, while cautioning that the scenarios presented are far from assured.
Eighteen months of warnings to both Somalia and the AU have not resulted in a credible contingency plan. Even now, these remain hypothetical pathways unless matched by genuine Somali leadership, political consensus, and the will to act.

“The Puntland forces have gone beyond any description. 🚨A recent U.S. airstrike in, Somalia’s Puntland State Calmiskaad Mountains has once again brought to light the long-standing tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the Puntland State.
In separate statements, both Villa Somalia and Puntland State House expressed appreciation for U.S. support. However, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has yet to acknowledge Puntland’s military operation, which has entered its 2nd phase. His official statement made no mention of Puntland’s role.
According to reliable sources, President Hassan Sheikh and Puntland President Said Deni have had no direct communication during the operation. Moreover, the federal government has provided no military, logistical, or medical support to Puntland’s operation against ISIS. Amid Puntland defense forces have successfully seized a key ISIS stronghold in the Bari region.
Earlier this month, Puntland’s VP Ilyaas Lugatoor told The Daily Somalia on X Space that the federal government had blocked the evacuation of wounded Puntland soldiers for medical treatment abroad. #Puntland #Somalia #US

On December 31, 2024, Puntland's security forces successfully neutralized 12 foreign ISIS fighters attempting to attack an army base in #Dharjale. Among those eliminated were individuals of #Moroccan, #Saudi, #Tanzanian, #Libyan, #Tunisian, #Yemeni, and #Ethiopian nationalities, highlighting the transnational nature of the ISIS network.
This operation underscores the broader challenge of foreign terrorist fighters, a phenomenon that transcends national borders. Puntland’s Minister of Interior, Abdi Faraha Juxa, emphasized the urgent need for a collective response, stating, "The ISIS attack on Puntland security forces and the recent ISIS-inspired attack on civilians in New Orleans demonstrate the global reach of terrorism. International support is critical to counter this menace effectively."
Experts, including Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh, a former commander of Somalia's Danab special forces, suggest that the Al-Miskad Mountains in Puntland may play a pivotal role in facilitating ISIS activities worldwide. He noted that the region could serve as a hub for logistical and financial support, enabling the group to plan and execute operations far beyond Somalia's borders, suggesting that the recent ISIS-inspired attack in New Orleans could have benefited from logistical and financial support originating from the region.
The recent attacks highlight the importance of a coordinated global effort to disrupt the networks and resources that sustain ISIS. Puntland's call for support presents an opportunity for the international partners to collaborate in addressing this shared threat. #Puntland #Somalia

When President @HassanSMohamud was in the opposition, he stressed the need to include Federal State Members in discussions to finalize the Constitution. However, now that he is in Villa Somalia, he asserts that he will not involve others [#Puntland & #Somaliland], as it is within his authority. Tomorrow, the Federal Parliament is set to ratify the controversial changes to the provisional Federal Constitution, proposed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This move has sparked widespread debate, with opposition from former leaders and Puntland, the first & largest Federal Member State (FMS) in #Somalia. Puntland argues that Article Four of its constitution mandates negotiations & agreements with the federal government before any unilateral changes. The outcome of these deliberations will significantly impact the country's political trajectory!.

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has issued an impassioned call for national unity and solidarity with the Somali National Army (SNA).

BREAKING: According to reliable sources, a consensus has been reached by Somalia’s National Consultative Forum to hold a unified election for both the Federal Government and Federal Member States Leadership.
The old electoral system in #Somalia, where parliamentarians held the power to elect the President, has come to an end, ushering in a new era where the President will be directly elected by the people.
This fresh approach grants citizens the right to elect their own leaders, giving them the power to shape the future of their nation.
As part of this significant transition, the position of the Prime Minister has been abolished, marking significant changes in the government structure.
A direct presidential election will be held where the President and his Vice President will run on a single ticket, allowing voters to select their preferred duo to assume the two top leadership positions.
Moreover, the nation will have two major political parties, enabling citizens to exercise their democratic rights by electing representatives via single constituency electoral model.
Stay tuned for more updates.
