The Sunday Times has just confirmed our worst fears. Mpho Mafole, the Chief Auditor of Ekurhuleni, wasn't just "another victim of crime." He was a man with a target on his back because he dared to follow the money.
Mafole was gunned down just three days after flagging massive irregularities in the R1.8 billion chemical toilet tender and the Harambee BRT funds. He saw the rot, he documented the looting, and he was silenced for it.
It makes you think—Floyd Shivambu has been shouting from the rooftops about the "Ekurhuleni Mafia" and the sanitised audits for a long time. If these allegations are true, Shivambu stands completely vindicated. While politicians play games, the people on the ground are left with pit latrines and broken transport because the money meant for them is being "eaten" by those in power.
We can’t keep losing honest public servants to the barrel of a gun. How many more Mpho Mafoles must die before we dismantle the tenderpreneur cartels?
