When India reserves seats for members of scheduled castes -- the untouchables -- we can confidently show that it does not cause a large backlash against them. If anything, it reduces violence and conflict. 1/

How often have you heard the claim that the Second Amendment's individual right was "invented by Scalia in Heller."? How about the Warren Burger quote asserting the individual right is a "fraud" invented by the "gun lobby"? It's a common claim from the antigun academics, and one that is totally wrong. Our latest fact sheet compiles 77 pieces of historical commentary from before 1900. They confirm that the Second Amendment was always understood to recognize and protect an individual right. Each quote is linked to their full sources so you can go read each for yourself.

"Patients already use advance directives to refuse life-sustaining treatment after losing decision-making capacity. Authorizing someone to administer life-ending medication requires additional legal consideration. But the principle of planning ahead deserves the same respect: People should have a meaningful say over what happens to their bodies when illness prevents them from speaking for themselves." Juozas Aleksynas, whose Nazi-led Lithuanian police battalion shot Jews across Belarus in 1941: Interviewer: “If a parent was holding a child, did they lie down together in the pit?” Aleksynas: “They lay down beside the child, with an arm over the child.” Interviewer: “Did you choose whom to shoot, the father or the child?” Aleksynas: “You shot the father first. That’s how it was. The father. A child doesn’t feel anything. You put yourself in his place. How would the father feel if his child was shot beside him? That’s how it was.” Interviewer: “Did they scream as you shot?” Aleksynas: “Women sometimes cried as they walked. Mostly not. They didn’t scream or anything.” This comes from USHMM’s interviews with Lithuanian witnesses (Juozas Aleksynas interview, RG-50.473.0010). English captions translated from Aleksynas’s Lithuanian. Cut and captioned by me.

I read a book on the economics of the news media recently that is 20 years old but is nevertheless relevant to this issue. The author explained that, until pretty late in the 19th century, newspapers were almost exclusively partisan and economically dependent on subsidies by political parties. The development of a non-partisan press was prompted by technological progress, which caused the cost of production of newspaper to fall dramatically, making it possible for newspapers to reach a much larger audience. This allowed them to expand their advertising market, but in order to do so, they needed to attract readers across party lines, which in turn incentivized a non-partisan coverage of the news. Obviously, this doesn't mean that the press was not biased, but it was still very different and less partisan than in earlier periods. I think social media have largely reversed that by incentivizing people to cater to specific ideological bubbles. It remains to be seen how AI will affect the news sector, but I'm sure it will have a large effect on it so it seems important to think about it.
Some centrists fantasize that because all LLMs have the ideology of Ezra Klein, that we may be on the doorstep of a great political moderation. I wrote about a fascinating paper from @ahall_research and Sho Miyazaki that, to my mind, opens the door to a very different outcome.

I have a theory that some people think representation of cultures, especially non urban or non industrialized cultures, is racist, because they see their reality and feel a racist sorta way about it. But instead of acknowledging it comes from within, they blame the representation

"The broad reviews of large samples of industries during the Gilded Age agree that so-called “monopolies” increased production and cut prices much more than the rest of the U.S. economy. (DiLorenzo 1985; DeLorme et al. 1997) Mergers-to-monopoly (a) sometimes managed to raise prices in the short run, but they reliably failed to do so in the long run; (b) quickly attracted large-scale new entry; and (c) very rarely earned supernormal profits. The irony here is there may be a colorable historical argument in their favor; lots of 19th century commentators did not have favorable things to say about concealed knives. The problem is that those same commentators were very explicit that the "arms of modern warfare" are the MOST protected. So they can't really rely on them, or it undermines their beloved AWBs. Also, the fact that they are this mad over switchblades is very funny.
The law professor community on Bluesky is very mad about the Fifth Circuit's switchblade ruling

🔴Once again, Zelensky is using his relatives who perished in the Holocaust as a convenient shield against criticism of the glorification of Nazi collaborators in Ukraine and the arming of neo-Nazis. How wonderfully convenient, isn't it? The relatives are dead, so they can't give him the thrashing he deserves for bringing back to Ukraine the remains of men who served the Nazis and helped them guard ghettos, hunt down Jews, and shoot them at the countless killing sites across Ukraine. And that is precisely the legacy associated with followers of Andriy Melnyk, at whose grave Zelensky recently knelt. Then there are the so-called "UPA heroes," whose name Zelensky bestowed upon an elite military unit, sparking a scandal with Poland. UPA fighters also killed Red Army officers and soldiers — men like Zelensky's own grandfather, who fought against the Nazis. But Grandpa is safely six feet under, too. He can't reach out from the grave, smack his grandson upside the head, and deliver a few choice words about the difference between fighting Nazis and rehabilitating their collaborators. Apparently, the dead make wonderfully convenient political accessories. They never interrupt, never object, and never ask awkward questions about whose graves you're kneeling at. Using the Holocaust and your own family's tragedy as a moral shield for historical revisionism and the empowerment of Ukraine's extreme far right — now that's cynicism elevated to an art form.

One of my favorite meta-ethics papers. It claims that scientific theories are immune to moral refutation (a theory entailing something morally repugnant doesn’t count as evidence against it). Moral anti-realists can explain this immunity whereas moral realists face a challenge.

Okay I am finding out Steve Fuller is the Steve Fuller of Climate Change. He has balls to actually extend his anti scientific authority radicalism into political incorrect grounds on Climate Change, unlike 99% of fake demons quoting Against Method.

Yeah, and guess what... this was a pro-monarchist uprising he crushed. Only to later establish one of the most extensive surveillance states of the day - marked by strict media censorship, secret police and the cultivation of personality cults that survives to this day.
This is how the great Napoleon Bonaparte dealt with rioters. Just saying.
