When practicing art, you improve not by drawing objects better but by seeing past the warped lens of objects and reproducing the visual world as it is: lines, motes, splashes of color. A person is not a circle on a rectangle with four cylinders; they are a complex, inarticulable field, irreducible, only properly presented without abstractions. Early models saw the world of images as a simple animal might, as a wash of light. They had the capacity to only barely conceive of some ontology overlaying the world. Later models were complex enough to inherit the categories and classifications of their creators, making them more useful but losing in the process a real innocence and authenticity.
