Respect my personal experiences with crowds, and being crushed by bigger people than myself. And don't deliberately misinterpret my statements to mean I am denigrating the victims in Seoul.

CNN is calling the event “crowd surge” or “crowd crush,” and not “stampede.” The latter implies that the crowd was running, which is contrary to the authority’s understanding.

S Korea is a paradox. It's post-industrial & advanced; public safety, efficiency, public etiquette has risen to new heights. But society remains cutthroat. An every man for himself mentality was the price of capitalist-led advancement. Is this the price of getting ahead?

Yonhap: “Some of the people on the ground had their faces covered in sheets and clothes. One passerby, Lee, who was nearly crushed said that after the crush the area could not be controlled. People only watched those crushed.” ‘m.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20221030…
Echoes of the Sewol ferry sinking here. Major policy changes likely to follow. But crowding remains a major issue in public places. A transformation in the quality of social interactions is key, something that has happened in the past decade. More needs to be done, however

It doesn't yet appear that we know what caused this madness. The police will investigate.

Quite a turnout in NYC for the 2022 Korean Festival in Union Square. It's nice to see the city returning to normal but the lines for the food stands were way too long...I ended up not eating anything
Headline is misleading. SKorea is not "squeezed" between the U.S. and China bc China and SK are not aligned in any way. Most SKoreans understand alliance values. That which is status quo never makes headlines, however. nytimes.com/2022/10/19/world…
In light of what happened to Hu, I'm leaving this here as a reminder that there is democracy in East Asia, and channels of peaceful protest where no one has to get hurt. Also, I see no foreign press coverage of the rallies in Seoul Saturday. en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2022102…
