CLEAN WATER REACHES MORE THAN 200 LUGAGA-WAMULUMA HOUSEHOLDS
Solar-powered Mmbworo project is designed to serve more than 500 households and support local institutions as it expands.
VIHIGA: More than 200 households in Lugaga-Wamuluma Ward, Vihiga Sub-County, have gained access to a reliable supply of clean and safe water following the completion and commissioning of the Mmbworo Water Project.
Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo commissioned the project, which has been developed to bring water closer to residents while strengthening the area’s resilience to climate change. Its installed capacity can serve more than 500 households, creating scope for more families to be connected through planned upgrades and expansion.
For residents already receiving water, the project offers benefits that go beyond convenience. Easier access to a dependable water supply can reduce the time and effort households spend obtaining water, support hygiene and well-being, and free up time for education, work, caregiving and small-scale economic activities.
The works included rehabilitation of the Mmbworo Spring source and construction of a 100M³ masonry clear-water tank. A solar-powered pumping system with a capacity of 10M³ per hour and a 100-metre head was installed to move water to a 50M³ elevated steel tank for distribution.
The project also included conservation of the spring catchment area, linking water access with environmental protection. Institutions within the locality are connected to the supply, extending the investment’s contribution to essential community services.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Ottichilo said the @VihigaCountyGov would continue investing in water infrastructure and other climate-resilient initiatives to cushion residents against the effects of climate change.
The Mmbworo Water Project is among the climate resilience investments being implemented by the Directorate of Climate Change under the Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme. County officials say the investment reflects an approach that combines resilient infrastructure, natural-resource conservation and improved access to essential services to strengthen livelihoods across Vihiga.
STRENGTHENING DIGITAL LAND GOVERNANCE THROUGH ADVANCED GIS TECHNOLOGY
This morning at the @UN Office at Nairobi, I officially received a state-of-the-art drone system, the DJI Matrice 350 RTK equipped with the Zenmuse L2 payload, donated by the @FAOKenya to the @VihigaCountyGov.
The drone will significantly enhance the County's capacity to collect accurate and timely spatial data, supporting key functions including land administration, physical and land use planning, infrastructure development, natural resource management, environmental monitoring, disaster preparedness, and improved service delivery. The technology will also strengthen Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solutions within Vihiga County and beyond through the Digital Land Governance Programme, which is co-financed by the @EU_Commission.
The handover ceremony was attended by the FAO delegation led by Country Representative Ms Farayi Zimudzi, the European Union team led by Ms Sanne Willems, Team Leader, and representatives from Fahari Aviation, led by General Manager Hawkins Musili, Ms. Norah Berrahmouni (Deputy Director, Land & Water Division at FAO Headquarters), Mr. Charles Mutethia (EU Programs Manager), Ms. Husna Mbarak (Team Lead Governance and Social Inclusion FAO).
On behalf of the people of Vihiga County and The County Government of Vihiga, I express our sincere appreciation to FAO and the European Union for their continued partnership and support in advancing digital land governance and GIS technologies across counties in Kenya.
This collaboration marks another important step towards data-driven planning, sustainable development, and enhanced public service delivery.

We mourn @kiolijohn passing. We also celebrate a life that was lived with purpose and impact. His legacy is reflected in the policies he helped shape, the institutions he strengthened, the partnerships he forged, and the countless individuals he inspired. Future generations will continue to benefit from the foundations he helped build in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.
On behalf of the climate change community, the people of Vihiga County and on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to John's family, friends, colleagues, and the wider climate and environmental community. May they find comfort in the knowledge that his life touched countless others and that his contributions will continue to shape a more sustainable and resilient future for Kenya, Africa, and the world.
May the soul of John Kioli Kalua rest in eternal peace, and may his remarkable legacy continue to inspire us to carry forward the important work to which he devoted his life.

I was privileged to attend the 17th East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing and Midwifery (ECSACONM) Biennial Scientific Conference at the Golden Tulip Airport Hotel in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania.
Held under the theme “Nurses and Midwives Sustaining Quality Healthcare in a Changing World,” the conference brought together nursing and midwifery leaders committed to strengthening quality healthcare across the region.
During the opening ceremony, I had the honour of delivering a keynote address as goodwill ambassador for the Kenyan delegation. I was also deeply grateful to be recognised for my continued support to ECSACONM since 2019.
The ceremony was officially opened by Nassor Ahmed Mazrui - the Minister for Health in Zanzibar on behalf of the President of Zanzibar. It was an inspiring start to important conversations on the future of nursing, midwifery, and resilient health systems. – at Zanzibar North, Tanzania
KIDUNDU STADIUM: A NATIONAL STAGE AND LASTING LEGACY FOR VIHIGA
Kidundu Stadium is steadily taking shape as Vihiga prepares to host this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations, a national moment that will place our county at the heart of Kenya’s independence story on 12th December.
Today, I joined the Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, and key stakeholders at Kidundu Stadium to review progress, resolve implementation priorities, and align on the urgent actions needed to deliver a facility worthy of this historic national celebration, in line with the commitment and direction of H.E. President William Samoei Ruto.
With the project currently at about 20% completion, we have agreed on an accelerated delivery programme. Works will now proceed concurrently, supported by increased manpower and 24-hour shifts. Immediate attention will be given to backfilling as other essential works continue, with the goal of completing the priority works by 30th November to allow adequate time for rehearsals ahead of Jamhuri Day.
To keep delivery on track, we have established a County Steering Committee, which I will chair, with the County Commissioner serving as Vice Chair. A Technical Committee, chaired by the Chief Officer for Public Works, Eng. Etale Tunya, will oversee the technical execution of the project and ensure that quality, safety, and timelines remain central to every stage of the works.
Beyond the national celebrations, Kidundu Stadium represents a direct investment in people, opportunity, and local economic growth. We have agreed that the contractor will employ residents from the region, ensuring that the project creates jobs, builds skills, and leaves immediate benefits within our community.
Vihiga has long been known for its proud sporting tradition, especially in football. The recent victory of Vihiga Cranes FC in the Safaricom Chapa Dimba Western Region competition is a powerful reminder of the talent that lives among us. The development of Kidundu Stadium will give that talent a stronger platform to grow, compete, and inspire the next generation.
I commend the Kenya Defence Forces team, the contractor, technical teams, and the local community for the spirit of collaboration already demonstrated. With renewed momentum, stronger coordination, and shared commitment, we are confident that Kidundu Stadium will be ready to welcome the nation to Vihiga on 12th December this year. – at Mbale, Kenya
