The appointment of Heather Baucher as Appeal Authority for the @churchofengland Redress Scheme has prompted my friend @seaofcomplicity to ask questions the Church must answer.
He raises concerns about her previous work in insurance litigation, her endorsement of an Evangelical Alliance publication, and how spiritual abuse will be understood in the appeals process. These are matters for transparent explanation, not assumptions about how she will judge. His call for a meeting with survivor representatives deserves a serious response.
But his challenge goes beyond one appointment. He describes survivors feeling unheard and increasingly disillusioned with a scheme intended to offer recognition and repair. Survivor involvement must mean more than a seat at a table where others retain all the power.
“Independent” is a claim to be tested. Who sets the rules? How are conflicts of interest addressed? How can survivors challenge decisions? Who answers when the process itself causes harm?
The Church has no right to demand trust. It must earn it through transparency, accountability and repair. Survivors should not have to exhaust themselves extracting what we have already promised.
We proclaim a crucified Christ. We cannot make those we have wounded carry the cross of our institutional self-protection.

Every question to NST gets “don’t know” or “have to ask Kennedys”. Lawyer advocates havent yet been briefed. How long will it take Survivors Trust to get up to speed ? “This year” looks increasingly unlikely. @MadsDavies @GabriellaSwerl @ReshapersCIC

I am grateful to Gilo for asking important questions. As a member of the Redress Survivor Advisory Group (we were down-graded from Working GP) I share concern that there's still significant work to do before we can be confident the scheme is ready & meets all that was promised.
The Church of England loves the word “independent”. Shame it struggles with the meaning.
Redress without genuine independence risks becoming another exercise in institutional self-protection.
Thank you, Gilo, @seaofcomplicity for asking the questions the Church would rather avoid.

As well as being a politician and highly successful novelist, don't forget Jeffrey Archer was a pretty nasty fraudster - like his father. In short, he was a crook. Many broadcasters - some who never dared ask him any tough questions - will gloss over that today.

The CofE’s statement of this premature parting was sent out by email to Victims, Survivors and their supporting groups earlier today by the CofE Engage team - followed immediately by a warning advisory:
“If this statement causes distress, support is available through…”
Rotten.

Every week, there is another scandal about Christians abusing people. This week, Rev Chris Brain; next week, who will it be? You can't expect churches to be full when they are unsafe.
Church halls can be the playground for abusers. The Church has this illogical view that someone who has abused, and then repented, won't do it again - so they don't bother intervening when that person starts to groom victims again.
They file it under the heading 'forgiveness'. It means they actively don't include these men as being part of the pool of people they need to safeguard. They think the Holy Spirit is doing that. It makes no sense to take their eyes off someone who has abused someone else sexually.
Safeguarding should be for everyone, not just for those people who have not abused anyone yet (or not been caught).

Dame Christine Ryan was envisaged to be in post for a 3-year initiative overseeing this Board. She started the role in October 2025.
The statement from Archbishops Council is in all likelihood a load of PR tut to hide that she had lack of support.

No religion should enjoy reserved seats for its clerics in the legislature. But it is even more egregious when the Church of England's hierarchy is forever engulfed in scandal. secularism.org.uk/news/2026/…

#Safeguarding in the #CofE is just a joke! Dame Christine, Ryan was appointed to oversee a three year program & another appointment bites the dust after 12 months!

The worst kind of survivor engagement is when our advice is ignored & dismissed as 'just opinion' Institutions are very good at this. They don't dismiss lawyers advice as just opinion, or insurers, safeguarders, police. It becomes another experience of retraumatisation.

It's hard to understand the rationale behind which church leaders are referred for disciplinary action, & which are not.

The disgust felt watching the CofE operate is overwhelming. I’m am so sorry for these victims.
The CofE dedicate infinite time, money, and legal energy to burying facts and actively mistreating victims vs ever getting their own house in order.
Disgusting. Shameful.

Sadly not. We need far tougher laws against covering up abuse

Chris Brain, former leader of the Church of England Nine O’Clock Service in Sheffield, has been found guilty of rape and further indecent assaults (he was also convicted last year). My thoughts are with the victims whose bravery has ensured that he is finally held to account
