Michigan State hangs on for a tough 2-1 road win against New Hampshire after falling 1-0 last night. Freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen was terrific again, making 38 saves after stopping 33 shots on Friday. Mason West and Anthony Romani were MSU’s goal scorers.

MSU coach Pat Fitzgerald on pregame radio show says Milivojevic and Patterson hope to return "as quick as they can recover." Says Kayd Coffman is a "gunslinger" who "has had a really good week" preparing for his first collegiate start at QB. Will run entire offense, not limited.

Since the NCAA changed eligibility rules in 1972, MSU has only started 2 true freshmen QBs: Dave Yarema (1982) and Jeff Smoker (2000). Kayd Coffman today vs. UCLA will be the third. (Note: Tyrone Willingham took a redshirt in 1972 and started 4 games in 1973).

Sources: Michigan State starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic (undisclosed) is not expected top play at No. 9 UCLA today. With back-up Cam Fancher out, true freshman Kayd Coffman is in line for his first career start. He’ll face UCLA back-up Ty Dieffenbach.

Have seen lots of reaction to the ESPN series on Nick Saban. A lot of history, reported then and subsequently (wrote a book on this, in fact), has been forgotten: Saban left MSU in 1999 for two reasons, both tied to then-President Peter McPherson. McPherson had welched on a $150,000 (not $100,000) raise committed to Saban. The stock market in the late '90s boomed and McPherson did not believe he could sell that raise to the MSU Board of Trustees. Saban then was making less than Tom Izzo. That violation of pure financial principle set the stage for Saban at least listening to another offer, even though he and Terry through their coaching stops had always most loved East Lansing, had wanted to return there, and most definitely wanted to stay in November, 1999. Another factor was McPherson's indifference to Saban's coaching. Even though the president had not been to a college football game between his college days and his arrival as MSU president, he "didn't believe Saban was a good second-half coach." True appraisal. What might have been considered by the president, even if he had been on firm ground -- and he certainly wasn't -- is that in 1998 the Spartans had only 71 players on scholarship within a roster's 85-man limit. That was due to attrition inherited from George Perles' NCAA probation sentence. Small wonder some second-half leads in 1998 had washed away. By 1999, Saban had a full scholarship roster, and a 10-2 record. But the tensions and intolerances had grown too severe, and Saban was at least open to LSU's offer. Even after Terry visited Baton Rouge and told him it was a "diamond in the rough" they were going to stick in East Lansing. A long night of talking and not sleeping preceded a 5:30 a.m. phone call from McPherson who, in Saban's view, was "belligerent" and insisted Saban wasn't going to put MSU over a barrel. The Sabans decided at that moment to leave for Baton Rouge.

“Then I’m also being told, ‘Hey, my team isn’t that good, and it’s your fault as the fan because we don’t have enough NIL (money for players), and you need to open your wallet.’” I worry that all kinds of sports are pricing out the next generation of fans.
Went to Penn State to find out the story behind the empty seats. Found a fanbase grappling with the new reality of college sports - and the cost of chasing championships. Thanks to everyone who spoke with me. nytimes.com/athletic/7690503…

A guaranteed, foolproof way for MiLB teams to draw more fans: Start the season one month later, end the season one month later. The weather in September/early October > weather in late March/April.
For the first time in decades, fewer than 30 million fans attended MiLB games over a full season. This is the third consecutive season in which attendance has dropped. BA's J.J. Cooper has more on MiLB attendance: buff.ly/VGK3w58

Jim Nantz says Mike Ditka used to pay and tip for everything with $100 bills, and never ask for change “I noticed early on that all he carried were $100 bills. All he did was peel off hundreds all the time. Buy a beer at the bar on the way out to dinner, ‘Yeah, give me a Budweiser.’ $100. Keep the change.” “Coat check, comes into a restaurant, comes out, $100. Man on the street, homeless, there was one guy that kind of understood the routine and he was there every week. Mike, every time, $100 bill.” “I finally got up the nerve to say, ‘Hey coach, why don’t you ever get change? Why just the hundreds?’ He says, ‘Hey, what’s the difference anyway?’” “He said, ‘You know, the way I look at it, when I die and they drop me down into the ground, I hope there’s a little opening in that coffin and my last $100 bill comes flying out and goes up into the sky and drifts away. That would make me happy.’” “So I said, ‘This gets a little pricey, doesn’t it?’ ‘It’s not that bad, Jim.’ He said, ‘Here’s the way I rationalize it in my head. We got 20 weeks. I come every single Friday to New York. I come in with 50 $100 bills, $5,000. And at the end of the season, I’m spending $100,000.’” “He would say, ‘I’ve allocated $100,000 to the football season to go enjoy myself in New York. And that’s the way it is.’ I take $5,000 in cash in hundreds every single week. And that’s what he did.”
