ITS MILITARY JUST MADE ITS BIGGEST QUANTUM BET YET.
The UK is putting £138 million toward getting government departments to actually buy quantum sensing and navigation tech, not just fund more research. It was first announced in the Oct 28 budget. This morning, at the UK’s National Quantum Technologies Showcase, the government confirmed a Defence Quantum Action Plan.
Inside it is £30 million from the Ministry of Defence, which the government calls the department’s single largest investment in quantum technology.
For scale, the MoD and its defence lab have published only about £4.3 million in quantum-related contracts since 2022. Over the same stretch they ran at least 12 field trials, starting with a Royal Navy quantum accelerometer test at sea in 2023. Lots of testing, almost no buying.
The reason is GPS, Quantum sensors can navigate without satellites, so they can’t be jammed or spoofed. Part of the UK’s push is British atomic clocks built to keep working when satellite signals are disrupted. A UK government study put the cost of losing satellite signals for just 24 hours at £1.42 billion.
