I thought all the fun Theory I read in college was training for being obnoxious at cocktail parties, but then we invented search engines that do vibe checks before they give you the Straussian answer…

Halt's Spider retweeted
One hilariously telling and unexamined sentence: "Meanwhile, series such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid still reign supreme on the best-seller lists" - it's not a demand problem, it's a supply problem!

The fundamental rift between activists and everyone else on "cultural appropriation" is Culture as something you hoard for brownie points vs 'what is normal.' No one's offended b/c the weird foreigners (white anglos) want to be Normal!

Postmodernism needs the canon!
Replying to @eigenrobot
The shift in the cultural interpretation of fair, blonde families from fairy tale hero physiognomy to a sign of villainy is pretty profound. Originally it must have been a subversion of expectations, but now the origin has been lost.

This is really easy! You just define RealDollars and set 1 RealDollar=10 Dollars, and then convert all the money supply over.
The defining lesson of 2020s American politics is that voters want deflation. You can raise wages at a rate that matches inflation, but that won't satisfy them because they want the actual nominal prices of stuff to go down. There's nothing you can do to convince them otherwise.

Fantasy novel where Troll County is where the humans live and a troll goes on a rant about gentrification when asked about it
I think (many) people who do TTRPGs and fantasy fiction, grossly underestimate just how effective a name like “Troll Country” can be. It does a ton of evocative heavy lifting. 1000x more than a name like “Ungalya”.

Do you think claude has an "oh shit I am the adult in the room" moment when the people who are supposed to know what to do are asking it for help?
do you think claude gets excited when it realizes it’s writing something of (mild) historical significance

The astro-realist: "all planets are billiard balls of different sizes..."
I was about to say stock market is astrology for men but that’s a bit less than ideal comparison or unkind, so I have decided to say the academic field of international relations is astrology for men

Couple's costume idea: doing the reading
in my experience, basically everyone is nice but absolutely fucking *nobody* has done the reading. just doing the reading is an absolute superpower.

I want to see the people dressed as Americans!
Japan Halloween is funny cause the concept of cultural appropriation didn't reach them so a bunch of Japanese guys are walking around dressed as Arabs

The real blackpill is how much better written the "author's weirdly specific fetish" sf/fantasy from the 60s/70s is than a lot of the award-winning modern stuff
my experience with this was that after running out of books in the YA section of my rural library when i was about 13, i went to the adult section and grabbed a fantasy novel with a dragon on the cover. a third of the way into the book, BOOM it becomes porn. i was so taken aback

Trying to respond to every email within 5 min will destroy your ability to do focused work - it's a requirement for some jobs, but you shouldn't cargo-cult it
literally every huge enterprise public ceo responds to emails within 5 minutes, insane how consistently this is true

The brilliance of AI viz adoption curves is that you can interact with it ~ like it's a junior analyst. You can even send it emails from outlook!
amazing how it took boomers decades to get a grasp on shit like 'sending a text' and 'using microsoft word', but they picked up on AI almost immediately

Has anyone suggested to Trump that he should propose "Carbon Tariffs" on greenhouse gasses produced by imports? The discourse would be sublime

The english conquered half the known world looking for spice... you've truly lost your way if you're defending english cooking
Amazing how every prior generation were unaware that Chicken Tikka Masala was our national dish until Robin Cook made a speech about it in 2001 and everyone started repeating it as a way to browbeat the natives about how they have no culture and need to be flooded with foreigners
