A senior Israeli diplomat has just confirmed what many of us already knew, relations between Australia and Israel are at an all time low, and the damage is deliberate. Aviv Ezra, head of Israel’s Asia Pacific division, slammed the Albanese government’s postOctober 7 recognition of a Palestinian state as “dramatically wrong.” It “sent the wrong message” to Hamas. Israel doesn’t see eye to eye with Canberra, the bilateral relationship is “affected,” and opportunities for deeper economic and strategic ties are being actively hindered. This isn’t a sudden spat. It’s the predictable outcome of a lifelong pro Palestinian activist finally getting the keys to the Lodge. Albanese co-founded the Parliamentary Friends of Palestine. He marched at 2000 rallies where Hamas and Hezbollah flags flew. His government recognised “Palestine” while Hamas still held hostages and the PA had delivered none of the promised reforms. Israel responded by revoking visas for Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority. Former Israeli adviser Mark Regev has openly called the relationship a “crisis.” Meanwhile, Australian taxpayers keep funding UNRWA $20 million a year in core funding, the same agency that had staff linked to the October 7 atrocities. Almost a year after the Bondi massacre targeting Jews, the diplomatic freeze continues. Israel is not some distant problem. It is a frontline democracy, a major intelligence and tech partner, and a country with deep historical ties to Australia dating back to the ANZACs. Treating it like an adversary while cosying up to the Palestinian leadership and ignoring the clear message it sends to terrorists is a betrayal of Australian interests and our Jewish community. Albanese can keep talking about a “two state solution.” Israeli officials are calling the reality what it is: a government that rewarded terror and wrecked a vital alliance.
