Morning weather update: A Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight statewide as an additional round of heavy rainfall is expected to pass over the Hawaiian Islands sometime this afternoon. Slow-moving rain cells may anchor on island terrain, causing the potential for flash flooding. Maui County and Oʻahu will see most additional rainfall through tonight – up to 6 inches on Maui and Lānaʻi, and  up to 4 inches on Molokaʻi and Oʻahu. Both Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi could still see pockets of heavy rain as the moisture trough passes. Remain informed through the statewide Flood Watch by subscribing to your local emergency alerts at ready.hawaii.gov and be ready to act if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Use caution traveling in heavy rain. Drive defensively, use both headlights and taillights, and avoid floodwater. Find weather updates at weather.gov/hfo.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash flood potential across the state will build this afternoon, especially for Oʻahu and Maui Nui, likely peaking overnight and through most of the day tomorrow. The central Hawaiian Islands of Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Maui could see up to 8 inches of rain from localized storms, 1 to 2 inches for Kauaʻi, and 2 to 4 inches for the Big Island. These localized storms could also produce gusty, damaging winds in isolated areas. Be aware of flash flooding potential, especially if you live near a stream, mountain valley or urban paved area where runoff and flooding is likely. Make sure you are receiving emergency alerts in case flash flood warnings are issued. Sign up at ready.hawaii.gov/alerts. Find weather updates and warnings at weather.gov/hfo.

🌋 20 years ago, Hawaiʻi was shaken awake. On Oct. 15, 2006, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck offshore of Kīholo Bay on Hawaiʻi Island, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. The Hawaiʻi National Guard quickly answered the call. Soldiers and Airmen conducted aerial damage assessments, supported state and county officials, assisted with damage assessment teams and helped clear debris from the Hamakua ditch, a critical source of water for agriculture. The response continued for weeks as Guard members supported communities affected by the earthquake and its aftermath. 20 years later, the mission remains the same: Always ready to serve Hawaiʻi when our communities need us most. 🌺 📖 Read the full history: dod.hawaii.gov/blog/2006-kih…
