What causes the formation of dental plaque? In collaboration with @tottori_univ, @HiroshimaUnivEn and @OGR_NagasakiU, OIST biologists investigate the filaments which enable P. gingivalis bacteria to stick to other bacteria and host tissues. oist.jp/news-center/news/202…
One of countless beautiful cicadas in #okinawa - @IsraelF96135088 , come visit us and catch all you need!
The new Lufthansa livery on this 747-8 at FRA rocks! Old 747-400 in the background. Pilots just opened the top hatch. Look forward to flying on the #queenofthesky to HDA!

There is currently an interesting weather constellation in #okinawa: after a first typhoon a week ago, the last days’ weather resembles a tropical storm, but with a sharp low-pressure trough line running like a race track from Taiwan all the way to Kyushu; southerly winds east of this line and northerly west of it, with rapidly changing heavy rain and thunderstorms. #meteorolgy

How do the Dead Sea’s inhabitants swim? In such extreme, high salt conditions, it takes unique adaptations to stay mobile. In @NatureComms , OIST researchers describe the sheathed filaments that propel single celled archaea through these salty waters. oist.jp/news-center/news/202…

Fantastic paper by @JamesBeanBio on phage Bas63 - this has been one of the first phages I ever isolated just for fun as a PhD student (in 2012!). It's #2 on this plate of Rhine river water on an E.coli K-12 lawn....
How it started /// How it's going
Most recent paper out now at science advances. We investigated a BASEL phage belonging to the felixounavirus genus and discovered evolutionary relationships with distantly related phages. Collaborative work between @HiCryoEM and @mihnea_bostina

🚨Preprint alert - this is a big one! We transfer the revolutionary power of TnSeq to bacteriophages.
Our HIDEN-SEQ links the "dark matter" genes of your favorite phage to any selectable phenotype, guiding the path from fun observations to molecular mechanisms.

This is wrong. The HPV vaccine prevents countless cancer cases. It is a game changer in cervical cancer prevention.
The HPV vaccine is the SECOND most dangerous vaccine per VAERS. Nobody should take it.
The people pushing it like @simonmaechling are badly misinformed about the risk / benefit.
Always check AlterAI @realAlterAI if you want to know the facts on HPV: alter.systems/p/0b5660ac-499…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
VAERS does not rank vaccines by "danger," as it collects unverified reports without proving causation or adjusting for doses given. CDC analyses of millions of HPV doses confirm its safety and efficacy in preventing cancers, with rare serious events (~1.8/100k doses). cdc.gov/vaccine-safety… vaers.hhs.gov/data.html cancer.gov/news-events/ca…
A more recent addition to our #cryoem GPU servers for @cryosparc live SPA processing of @JEOL_Japan #cryoARM data from @DirectElectron Apollo cameras:
GigaByte 2U dual Epyc w/64TB NVMe flash paired w/ a small-ish 400TB Supermicro 36-HDD TrueNAS storage server for raw data. The GigaByte has up to 8 GPUs, currently 6 (2x RTX5080, 1x 3080, 1x 4070, 2x2080Ti) after removing their fans and trimming the cooling blades to make them fit. Temps are no problem, max 60C. 😊
