ON THE DISCORD BAN IN THE PHILIPPINES For Patrik Ferrer, who manages an agency, @discord is his primary communication tool. His clients are predominantly game companies, whose user demographic constitutes a massive chunk of Discord’s user base. On September 23, news outlets began reporting that major ISPs have blocked the social communications platform, a directive from local regulators. While Ferrer can currently still access the app, the threat of a permanent, inescapable block keeps him on edge. For thousands of other Filipino remote workers, crypto traders, and community managers like Ferrer, the disappearance of the platform from major local networks was more than just a minor inconvenience. It cut off their digital lifeline and current and potential income. “If it is totally blocked, more than 30 families will lose their livelihood,” Ferrer said, as his team members rely directly on the income generated through these Discord-based client relationships. If more providers push through with the blocking, the move could be the culmination of a swift crackdown that government officials said is aimed at curbing online radicalization and child exploitation. However, instead of cleaning up the internet, critics argue that the blanket ban has collateralized the country's booming digital economy. bitpinas.com/go/discord-feat…
