Brazil has repeatedly tried to clear out favelas and replace them with everything from middle-class neighborhoods to taxpayer-subsidized social housing.
What happens every single time is that the affordable housing projects morph back into favelas within a few years, and when the government moves people out entirely and relocates them to new neighborhoods, the relocation sites themselves eventually turn into favelas.
This has been going on since the late 1960s, yet every decade or so, government officials have this idea that favelas are just a product of poverty, when in reality they're a product of the people who live within them.
It's like that meme video we've all seen of a beaver still trying to build a dam in someone's hallway using stuffed animals and cardboard boxes. You can take a man out of the favelas, but you can't take the favela out of the man.
This week I flew to a farm in Molokai, accompanied by a sous from where I live, to sample, plant, and harvest the best onion I have ever eaten. This morning I discovered a rando grower from the Kona hills who grows my favourite tomatoโฆthe brandywine. This week has been a banger.

Israel has ordered 20 British diplomats, including the Consul General, to leave the country following Londonโs sanctions against Israeli settlements.
The British Consulate in Jerusalem has officially lost its consular status, with its signage removed.

This is something I write about in Pagan America, the emergence of a kind of therapeutic witchcraft, which is closely tied to notions of identity and empowerment, and is particularly attractive to young women in a de-Christianized culture.
Somewhat counterintuitively, this therapeutic witchcraft sits well alongside modern materialism. Itโs what C.S. Lewis called the โmaterialist magician,โ who manages to โemotionalise and mythologiseโ science, so that they worship what they vaguely call โForcesโ while denying the existence of โspirits.โ
The Catholic Church, or what remains of it, especially itโs youth ministry and young adult programmes could learn much from the Modern Orthodox and Orthodox Jewish community on how to keep Catholics Catholic, but they wonโt for obvious reasons.
