Brazil has repeatedly tried to clear out favelas and replace them with everything from middle-class neighborhoods to taxpayer-subsidized social housing.
What happens every single time is that the affordable housing projects morph back into favelas within a few years, and when the government moves people out entirely and relocates them to new neighborhoods, the relocation sites themselves eventually turn into favelas.
This has been going on since the late 1960s, yet every decade or so, government officials have this idea that favelas are just a product of poverty, when in reality they're a product of the people who live within them.
It's like that meme video we've all seen of a beaver still trying to build a dam in someone's hallway using stuffed animals and cardboard boxes. You can take a man out of the favelas, but you can't take the favela out of the man.

The last American serviceman executed by a US military firing squad was Private Eddie Slovik, on January 31, 1945.
He was shot at about 10:04 a.m. near Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France, by a 12-man squad from the 109th Infantry Regiment using M1 Garands (11 live rounds, one blank).

This is something I write about in Pagan America, the emergence of a kind of therapeutic witchcraft, which is closely tied to notions of identity and empowerment, and is particularly attractive to young women in a de-Christianized culture.
Somewhat counterintuitively, this therapeutic witchcraft sits well alongside modern materialism. It’s what C.S. Lewis called the “materialist magician,” who manages to “emotionalise and mythologise” science, so that they worship what they vaguely call “Forces” while denying the existence of “spirits.”

We’ve never seen anything like this before. A man was conscripted into jury duty by the government. He performed his civic duty and followed his conscience, refusing to acquit a woman who confessed to systematically executing her three children. The defense attorney immediately launched a public smear campaign against the juror. Soon several other jurors joined the campaign. Then the media. Even the defense attorney’s wife has joined. Now they’re doxxing the man, digging into his past, contacting his family, showing up at his house. All of this both to punish him for refusing to go with their program, and to pollute any future jury pool by making it clear that anyone who votes to convict Clancy will have their life destroyed. It’s truly one of the most outrageously evil things we’ve ever seen from the Left, and that’s saying something. A direct assault on the integrity of our justice system. They are burning down every boundary and standard in their path. And doing it all for the sake of a child murdering psychopath. Unfathomable.
