Many materials described as bio-leathers still depend on polyurethane (PU), PVC, synthetic scaffolds or binders to create structure and mechanical performance. Lab Grown Leather Ltd has developed a different route through its 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 (𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗣™), where cells are encouraged to form their own extracellular matrix and build tissue from within. 𝗧-𝗥𝗲𝘅 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿™ demonstrates how that platform can be combined with 𝗔𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗔𝗣𝗠). Reported ancient collagen fragments are used with protein inference models to generate candidate collagen sequences, allowing the team to explore how biological structure can be reconstructed and then assessed for useful material characteristics. One selected candidate showed 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁, suggesting greater potential for collagen cross-linking and improved mechanical performance. Rather than relying on plastic-based components to provide structure, the aim is to engineer more of that performance into the biology of the material itself.
