Ideally we should aim to vote for a parliament of 400 equally good potential Presidents. What we learned from the City of Johannesburg Mayoral situation is that our system is designed so that any MP could be president. That's why a strong parliament matters.

Ben Turok, an @MYANC veteran and one of the greatest South Africans of his generation and who worked with the next generation at @IfaaCT, has passed away at 92. In May this year, @Caz_RSA interviewed him for Africa Is A Country about democracy and the Left africasacountry.com/2019/07/…

Truly a great loss. I had the privilege to listen to him speak a few months ago at the #SocialJusticeSummit hosted by @ThuliMadonsela3 & @StellenboschUni ~ a remarkable life, lived with purpose and impact. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. #BenTurok
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our director in the early hours of this morning. He fought until the end for a society where freedom & economic justice were realized and the dignity of all respected. We will fight to continue this legacy. ifaaza.org/2019/12/09/a-trib…

Prof Ben Turok is gone, he survived an apartheid treason trial and years of struggle that followed. 55 years later he stood in solidarity with civil society, in rejecting the ANC’s Secrecy Bill. It earned him the ire of Zumas caucus. What a life, what a mensch.
