Human visual processing naturally recognizes upright faces and bodies with significantly greater accuracy than when those same images are presented upside down. This phenomenon is known as the inversion effect, and it serves as a distinct cognitive signature indicating that the brain is processing a stimulus holistically as a human being rather than assembling it piece by piece. When people look at inanimate objects, this upright recognition advantage shrinks considerably because the visual system processes objects as a collection of isolated parts. Psychological experiments have demonstrated that when viewers are exposed to sexualized images of women, such as models wearing underwear, the typical human inversion effect decreases. This sensory shift indicates that the visual system alters its baseline mechanics, temporarily processing the female form in a fragmented manner that resembles the processing of an inanimate object. To investigate whether this ingrained cognitive habit could be interrupted, researchers at the University of Exeter conducted a double-blind experiment involving 76 student participants. The investigators divided the participants into two distinct analytical groups to test the effects of neuromodulation. One group received 10 minutes of active transcranial direct current stimulation, which passes a weak electrical current through two electrodes positioned on the forehead to influence localized brain activity. The remaining participants received a 30-second placebo treatment designed to safely replicate the physical tingling sensation of the electrodes without delivering a sustained electrical current. Following the procedure, the structural gap in how the images were processed completely vanished within the actively stimulated group. The neural intervention successfully eliminated the bias by directly improving the ability of the participants to correctly recognize the upright images of sexualized women. Lead researcher Ciro Civile noted that these experimental results offer initial evidence that the perceptual habits underlying sexual objectification are not fixed or permanent. However, the authors strongly emphasize that because this was a confined laboratory study capturing immediate visual reactions without evaluating long-term attitudes, behavioral habits, or sexist beliefs, the technique cannot be interpreted as a treatment for sexism.
