Simply just make bosses less important and regular enemies more important, the biggest use case of conditionals is already going to be encounters with multiple foes anyway

I firmly believe that if you are creating a game and you put status ailments in the game, only to make every single elite enemy and boss completely immune to status ailments altogether, I think you should reconsider being a game designer and ponder busking for coins on the street

I guess bosses *can* be important narratively but idk why boss defenders act like it’s a core element and every single game needs to implement them in their structure, there are defo a lot of games that would e better with less or even no bosses

The main issue is that "player expression" isn't something to be forced into your game for its own sake, it simply arises naturally with good design. There's plenty of "expression" to be done in a game like Megaman, shmups, etc despite those games being relatively restrictive
