The Bombay High Court has officially halted @mybmc's
attempt to convert the iconic Neville D’souza football ground in Bandra reclamation into an exhibition/convention centre.
Despite oral assurances to maintain the status quo, the civic body’s General Body pushed through Item No. 22 on August 18. Taking a strict stance, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad restrained the BMC and state government from taking any further steps until the next hearing on September 18.
The bench delivered a stern reality check to the civic body:
"You tell us where the people will be playing football? Some space has to be left open; otherwise, the next generation will forget maidani khel (outdoor sports) and the grounds."
This historic ground hosts over 900 matches annually and serves as a vital sporting hub for Mumbai’s youth.
The court made it clear that the 'majesty of law' cannot be jeered at. A massive sigh of relief for athletes, local communities, and open-space advocates.

“We direct that the
Corporation and other Respondents would refrain from initiating any further steps with regard to Item No.22 of the General Body Resolution dated 18th August, 2026 and the football ground at issue until further hearing and orders in this matter.”
Neville D’Souza ground reservation changed to convention centre: BMC general body on Tuesday night approved a proposal to change the reservation of the Neville D’Souza Football Ground at Bandra Reclamation from a playground to a convention and exhibition centre. The civic house has a majority of BJP-Shiv Sena-corporators. The proposal, listed as item 22, was moved by Improvement Committee chairman and Shiv Sena corporator Sandhya Doshi.

We will fight this land grab scam in Mumbai that is handing over land valued at thousands of crores, and more importantly open spaces, for peanuts to BJP’s friends.

The All India Football Federation, on behalf of the AIFF and the participating clubs, confirmed that the Indian Super League 2026-27 season will proceed with 13 participating clubs, playing in a double round-robin format on a home-and-away basis.
The kick-off date for the ISL 2026-27 season will be announced in due course.
Further information regarding the season, including the fixtures, will follow in a separate communication.
A club representative said, "We’re pleased to get the number of teams locked in for the season. This now allows us to move forward with essential commercial discussions and fixture planning for the league”.

AIFF Statement on FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026
"The AIFF condemns the incorrect claims that its decision not to participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has resulted in a predetermined financial penalty or fine.
The AIFF is also concerned about the public circulation of unverified figures and claims regarding its finances without any supporting basis or documentation.
The decision to host five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil was taken through the appropriate institutional processes, recognising the exceptional opportunity it presents for Indian football, the national team and millions of fans. The match will give a morale boost to the Indian national team while driving fans towards Indian football, the impact of which is unquantifiable. The match is a mutually agreed international sporting opportunity between two football federations and should not be portrayed as a one-sided arrangement.
The AIFF respects the democratic right to express opinions on Indian football. However, statements concerning the Federation's finances and use of funds must be based on facts and verifiable information.
The circulation of factually incorrect statements has the potential to adversely affect India’s reputation and standing nationally and internationally. We believe those who have made these claims have the best interests of Indian football in mind and may be misinformed. The AIFF, through this statement, seeks to make all aware of the facts. Should the concerned person(s) continue to disseminate incorrect claims, the AIFF will pursue appropriate legal remedies against those who continue to knowingly publish and/or circulate false and defamatory statements."

CASE AT CAS ON ISL LICENSE TRANSFER
Sources in the AIFF claimed that an complaint is believed to have been filed in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) in Switzerland seeking an immediate Interim/Provisional Order to stay and halt the execution of the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) and the subsequent transfer of the Indian Super League (ISL) sporting license from Jamshedpur Football & Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL) to Churchill Brothers Sports Club Private Limited.
No further details are available yet. It is also not known whether any such application has been filed with the AIFF Judicial Committees before the alleged move to CAS along with additional documents.
