Just look outside, no need for such stupid gadgets at all, for about 100 years people have driven cars in all kinds of weather, these stupid gadgets are costly and useless. Assisted driving..fuck off..

If I was a young dad again, there are five things I’d do differently. 1️⃣ I’d stay away from travel sports. Not going to say it was a waste of time and money (it wasn’t), but it cost too much time and money. The opportunity cost was big. Lots of ways we could have been spending our time away from hot, dusty fields. 2️⃣ We should have travelled more often. We had some amazing trips, but we should have taken more of them. And it didn’t require traveling to the other side of the world. Lots of amazing places nearby we could have explored. Travel is such an amazing way to share experiences and strengthen bonds. 3️⃣ I stuck with miserable jobs (and startups) for too long. I know this took more of a toll on the kids than I realized at the time. I’m not good at keeping work at the office, and sticking w bad situations for too long seeped into who I was at home. Not in terrible ways, but via negativity that wasn’t good modeling for the boys. 4️⃣ Let them be kids for a while. I think I felt too firmly that the world is a rough place and that they needed to understand that fact. It’s true, fine, but I think I tried, unnecessarily, to teach some of those lessons too early. 5️⃣ Shut up and listen. I’m a talker, and in many ways that has served me well. But with the boys, I think just sitting and listening - really listening - was something I didn’t do often enough. Not everything needs to be teaching them a lesson. Sit, listen, and you’ll be surprised by the lessons they teach you. Net net, I think I did a pretty solid job, but there’s always big room for improvement. One’s now graduated college, the other is in the thick of it, and they’re both smart, kind, strong and decent men. I’m truly blessed. 🙏 For those of you on the young Dad path now, hope some of these things land.

An “Autoland” refers to allowing the autopilot to land the jet. Many think that most landings are performed this way, but it’s actually the opposite – only a tiny fraction of landings are performed this way, and for good reason. “CAT III” refers to different categories of the “Instrument Landing System” (ILS). The ILS is something like a homing beacon, w/ both a horizontal & vertical element. The jet can decipher the signals to tell if it’s left or right of the runway centerline (the “Localizer”), and if it’s high or low on the “Glideslope”. Then it displays this information for the pilots so we can fly through the weather. Some of these signals can be used 20 or more miles away, and most autopilots are able to “couple” to the signals for navigating. The different categories, or CATs, are based on how low you can get to the ground before you either have to see the runway to land, or initiate a “Missed Approach” (basically a go-around). This is your “Decision Height” (DH). As the CAT numbers rise, the level of risk does, too, because the DH gets closer to the ground. Because the risk rises, the type of equipment used & the redundancies required increase with each CAT, as well. Most airports will have a CAT I ILS approach, but generally only major airports have a CAT III, and then only for certain runways. CAT III requires special runway lighting & antennas for the ILS, for example, so it’s an extra expense. Not all jets will be equipped for a CAT III either, and it requires special training for the pilots as well as procedures for the controllers. At my airline, only the Captain is allowed to fly a CAT III. A CAT I will usually get you to about 200’ above the ground (it varies) before you either have to see the runway or go missed. The autopilot can be on for this, but once you see the ground you must disconnect the autopilot & manually land. All commercial pilots are trained to this standard. CAT II might step you down another hundred feet, to 100’ above the ground, before you have to see the runway. A CAT III ILS can bring you all the way down to the runway, even when visibility is zero, but generally only for jets equipped with an “Autoland” system. The autoland requires some special features in the jet. It varies some by manufacturer, but the FAA publishes a list of minimum equipment required. This usually is all about redundancies…having two functioning radio altimeters, for example. If any of this equipment is missing or broken, you can’t do an autoland. The autoland system has to be tested in flight periodically, or after certain maintenance procedures. We do this on clear days, so we can monitor how it’s doing visually. It has to land within certain tolerances to pass the test. But, even on a clear day, it still requires special procedures & coordination. For example, the Tower has to keep other airplanes further away from the runway than normal. If one of them taxis in front of the ILS signal, it can mess it up & the jet starts following signals that are now no longer guiding it accurately. Which leads to a bad day. The autoland is further limited by environmental factors which pilots are not limited by. Reduced maximum crosswinds, for example, or maximum tailwind. Depending on the manufacturer, the autoland has different capabilities after actually touching down. And, by the way, it *usually* does a pretty nice job of touching down softly. It’s not the smoothest landing you’ve ever had, but it’s pretty good. Some will continue to track the runway centerline as the brakes slow you down…but others have no idea where they are after touchdown & head for the grass if permitted, so you have to turn off all automation immediately after touchdown. In any case, autoland is only used in a tiny fraction of landings. Most of the time, it’s the pilot, doing it manually, often just using visual references. The airlines want it that way…over-reliance on automation creates pilots that can’t fly when automation fails.

IndiGo built a spotless brand over 20 years. Clean, familiar, dependable. In the last 100 hours, it has torched it. As the Govt capitulates to blackmail, IndiGo still believes it is too big to play by the rules. And it has forgotten the flyer. My take:

Indigo sold tickets to flights for which they had no scheduled pilots. This itself should be grounds for criminal prosecution.

I'm so old I wrote that! That's assuming it's the Windows version, which is the one I worked on. The Win9x game, art, and original code, were done by Maxis/Cinematronics. I ported it to Windows NT, converted the x86 asm to C, made it work on RISC, and so on. Success has many fathers, and all credit should really go to the original designers... I'm just the fun uncle that brought it to the masses.

The spoon slipped from my fingers as the news flashed on the screen. “An attempted abduction near Delhi’s Jesus and Mary College was thwarted late last night,” the NDTV anchor announced. “The accused, Professor Rajat Malhotra, a history lecturer at Delhi University, was shot dead at the scene.” I felt the cereal turn to ash in my mouth. “Police say Malhotra lured a student into his car by claiming he needed help with rescued puppy. The incident occurred near the back gate of the college, where the road curves, secluded, unlit.” The photo that flashed on-screen made me recoil. It was him. Professor Malhotra. The man who lived in the bungalow above mine, in Jor Bagh. “The woman screamed, attracting the attention of an off-duty constable .When he saw Malhotra trying to push her into the back seat, he intervened. The professor drew a pistol. The officer responded with six rounds.” That explained the sirens I’d heard last night. The chaos. The thud of boots above. I’d assumed it was another one of his Delhi socialite parties where they will drink French champagne, discuss woman safety and then fuck whatever they can get their hands on . “The police believe he may have had a history of similar crimes,” the anchor added, gravely. On the couch beside me, my son stirred. I turned the volume down quickly. Professor Malhotra had always waved at him before leaving . Smiled with a tenderness that now made me sick. “They say justice has been served,” the anchor concluded. But they were wrong. I got up, walked to the corner where I kept our rations. Half a pack of rice, some daal , noodles .Some glucose biscuits. Two bottles of water. I packed them away again. Would they come back? Would the police ever guess that behind the bookshelf in his basement, there was a room—soundproofed, cement-walled—built like a bunker? Would they find the girl who vanished six years ago, who once walked out of Jesus and Mary College at dusk, believing a professor’s voice when he said, “my puppy’s not breathing, please help”? I heard my son’s voice behind me. “Mumma, when will Papa come back?” I turned slowly. “Papa won’t be coming,” I said. He nodded, not understanding. Slowly , he grew weaker. So did I. And I knew now—no one was coming. Not anymore. Not after the police sealed off the house. Not after the papers stopped reporting. Not after everyone had moved on. We were beneath the city. Forgotten. Dust and darkness. And we would die here, just as we had lived the last six years: Silent. Hidden. Unfound.

Every 3 days, IndiGo flies more people than the entire population of Jaipur. • 12 crore passengers in FY25 • 64% domestic market share • 430+ aircraft fleet • One flight takes off every 56 seconds No glamour, no drama, just ruthless execution. Here’s how they built a monopoly in Indian skies. Bookmark and retweet this thread to revisit it later

My nani went on to do her BA then B.Ed then M.Ed. At a time when getting children to schools was a huge task. This is a page from her class 6th homework. Do notice the date on top. Nearly as old as the country itself.

This truly must be the dumbest use of data I have ever seen. We literally introduced 200 million people into this middle class from abject poverty in the past decade. It's obvious they will pull the average down as they enter. Can't believe they published this in @FT
This is a staggering chart. Indian middle class wages have stagnated over the past decade while food prices have gone up. In my newsletter today ft.com/content/57bcc980-5503…

This is an appreciation post for the lady controller on 124.2 this evening. We got the living day light thrashed out of us while getting into @DelhiAirport. Thunderstorm to the left of us, thunderstorm to the right of us. Wx everywhere. But when I heard her voice, I knew we were in good hands. Extremely calm, extremely professional. One of the best controllers I’ve come across. If anyone on the timeline knows her, please pass on my regards. 🫡 P.S: GS mini rocks @Airbus
Multiple aircrafts bound for delhi diverted due to wx.
