Hey Siri, How can I negatively gear a cow?
Denmark, the #3 EU #meat exporter (for now) plans to introduce the world's first carbon tax on livestock:
- Farmers will pay $100 annually per cow for greenhouse gas emissions.
- This is the world's first such tax, targeting a 70% emissions reduction by 2030 (from 1990 levels).
- Agriculture accounts for 22.4% of Denmark's emissions.
Key details:
- Five months of negotiations led to this decision.
- The tax starts at 300 Danish kroner ($43) per tonne of CO2e in 2030.
- It increases to 750 kroner ($108) in 2035.
- After a 60% income tax deduction, farmers will initially pay 120 kroner ($17) per tonne, rising to 300 kroner in five years.
Additional measures:
- The bill, essentially a meat and dairy tax, awaits parliamentary approval.
- Approval is expected after the summer holidays.
- Supported by a 40 billion kroner ($5.7B) investment for the green transition.
- Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus states this will help Denmark achieve climate neutrality by 2045.
- He believes other countries will be inspired by Denmark's initiative.
