The Nobel Peace Prize is announced in Oslo today, and in the White House a small boy in a very long tie is pretending not to watch the clock. He has, he assures us, ended eight wars, or nine, or possibly ten, the number rising whenever the applause thins. He has also ended the war he started himself, 58 times in eight months, which tells you everything about the war and rather more about him. He will not win, and one almost feels sorry for him, because he will never understand why. The prize goes to people who make the world less dangerous, and he is the man who threatened to wipe Iran off the map and then waited for someone to call it statesmanship. What he wants is not peace but a gold medal that says somebody finally approved of him. So naturally he doesn't want it. He has spent a year insisting on this, ever since he texted Norway's prime minister to explain how richly he deserved it. It is the oldest trick of the unloved child, who announces that the party looked boring anyway while standing at the window with his nose against the glass.

There’s compelling evidence that training with light loads can build muscle just as effectively as heavier loads when sets are taken sufficiently close to failure. However, some influencers claim that high-reps should be avoided because they induce substantial fatigue. It’s true that some acute research suggests greater strength impairment and perceived discomfort after light vs heavy load (e.g., PMID: 32401690). Why? High-rep sets produce substantial metabolic stress and acidosis, which can make training feel particularly demanding and associated neuromuscular effects conceivably may linger. However, there’s an important caveat: light-load training is unfamiliar to most lifters. Because novel exercise tends to produce greater muscle damage and fatigue, these acute findings may overstate the recovery demands of light-load training when performed regularly. Indeed, repeated exposure ultimately attenuates these effects. To this point, our lab conducted an 8-week study examining the effects of light (25–35RM) versus heavier (8–12RM) loads performed to failure in trained men (PMID: 25853914). During the first week, several participants in the light-load group puked, and all reported high levels of discomfort. By the second week, however, these adverse responses had largely resolved. Importantly, the overwhelming body of longitudinal research shows similar whole muscle hypertrophy with light vs heavy load training, indicating that fatigue does not influence results. From a practical standpoint, using a range of loading zones may be a viable approach to maximize hypertrophy while providing variety in training. Also, some research shows that different loads may preferentially stimulate different muscle fiber types, which could be synergistic to hypertrophy (evidence remains equivocal). Take-home: Acute research cannot necessarily be extrapolated to long-term results. Light loads are an effective hypertrophy stimulus—but “lighter” doesn’t necessarily mean “easier.” High-rep sets near failure can be extremely demanding and may temporarily prolong recovery, but evidence indicates any initial effects on fatigue don’t compromise long-term gains.

We all need to wake up to the existence of a new right wing alliance, clearly called for in the US National Security Strategy issued in December 2025, which will include the German AFD, the Rassemblement National in France, Nigel Farage’s party and those even further to the right in the UK. Their political advance will be led, supported, fuelled and financed by Trump, the TechBros, Putin, and whatever other sources can be found around the world. They are actively interfering in the Alberta referendum, and will fund whatever racist and separatist groups they can find around the world. Failure to understand this, and to fight it, will put our own democratic lives at risk.
This is very clear: The AFD supports the Russian slaughter of Ukrainian civilians, and will favor the slaughter and conquest of other Europeans too. No one can say they didn't know, or were not warned.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”. The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Today Reform UK has announced they will deny social housing to single mothers and their children simply because they aren’t married. They are a vindictive and dangerous party who only care about themselves.
“Would a married British couple get priority over a single British person?” Richard Tice: “Yes… having British-born children is a good thing. We need to encourage that.” Q: “A single person might have children.” Tice: “Children in married couples will do really well at school and we want to encourage that.” Q: “Where would a married same-sex couple fit in your priority list?” Tice: “There’ll be an allocation list… we’re focused on young British workers first.” @TimesRadio

Update: This "Super El Niño" will be perhaps the strongest in 500 to 1000 years, and could legitimately be the most extreme global weather or climate event experienced by humanity since the invention of the printing press. Only more extreme situation is a volcanic winter.
The upcoming "mega El Niño" could be the strongest since the 1877 event that wiped out 4% of the Earth's population due to heat waves, drought and pestilence. Scientists watching every weather model update are getting "heart palpitations" ❤️
