👉🏿On behalf of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation @TheBJHRF I urge the Chinese Government to immediately release #JoshuaWong
Beyond the U.S. election results, there's something else you should care about: My friend Joshua Wong has been sentenced to another 10 years in prison for his peaceful advocacy of democracy in Hong Kong. He's been behind bars for over 2,100 days. When the police knocked on his door, Biden had just been elected, the iPhone 12 was brand new, and OpenAI had only recently launched the GPT-3 API for developers. He has not walked free since November 2020. — In 2016, I was elected as the youngest member of the legislature in Hong Kong. Joshua led the election campaign and worked 18 hours a day. I promised Joshua that we'd form a caucus together in the next term, in 2020, when he'd be old enough to run. It turned out to be the last time Hong Kong held a Legislative Council election in which a genuine political opposition could compete (though only around half the seats were electable). Beijing later imposed an election reform to make Hong Kong's election more like Iran's. Since 2020, the Chinese regime has dismantled Hong Kong's civil society and cracked down on political dissent. Nearly two thousand people have been imprisoned on political grounds. Many others have left the city to seek refuge elsewhere. I fled and was granted asylum in the UK. Joshua is expected to leave prison at 40, after 16 years in jail. Some say he’s naive or reckless; I fiercely disagree. He's one of the most strategic, persistent and risk-taking people I know. He might well have become an amazing entrepreneur if he'd been born elsewhere. He’s brave enough to do something most wouldn’t: risking his freedom to stand up for what’s true and right. I am so humbled by his dedication, and proud to call him my dear friend. When I left Hong Kong, I had no idea that we wouldn't be able to speak for nearly six years. Now, plus ten. When you're young, and work is so intense and busy, you never think to take time to chat. When you're young, and work is so intense and busy, you don't always think to make time just to get together. When people asked me what I regretted most, I often said I hadn't spent enough time simply hanging out with the brilliant people around me. I still feel that loss deeply. I wish I could see him as soon as possible. Joshua should be released immediately. — If you don’t know who Joshua is, I suggest you turn on Netflix and search for his name. No matter how long the authoritarian Chinese regime keeps him imprisoned, his name has already been written into history as one of the bravest activists to stand up against one of the world's most powerful autocracies. Even behind bars, he continues to demonstrate extraordinary courage.

As we noted in our joint statement, Joshua's meetings with US officials, including then-Senator Rubio, were cited in the case against him: freedomhouse.org/article/hon… Peaceful advocacy is not a crime. Joshua must be freed. #FreeJoshuaWong #FreeThemAll
The U.S. strongly condemns the Hong Kong Court’s decision to once again sentence Joshua Wong for exercising his freedom of speech. He has used peaceful means to defend the rights promised to all individuals in Hong Kong. We call for his immediate release and that of all unjustly detained persons.

Me talking outside my office in 2015 with a teenage Joshua Wong (along with Martin Lee). Joshua has already spent the last six years in prison for supporting democracy, and China just sentenced him to an additional 10 years. hrw.org/news/2026/11/05/hong… Will Trump raise this with Xi?

By the time Joshua reaches the age of 40, he would have spent almost half his life in jail. This tells what the regime fears most: hope, courage, and new ideas. But keeping him behind bars would not put out the fire of dissent Joshua has already sparked. It’s in our DNA by now.
One of Hong Kong's best-known democracy activists, Joshua Wong, was sentenced to 10 more years in jail on Thursday for collusion with foreign powers. Wong has already spent almost six years behind bars and was previously expected to be freed in January u.afp.com/SyR5

10 years added on Joshua's current four-year-eight-month sentence beyond his planned January 2027 release. Speechless.

Take a moment today to think about the courage of Joshua Wong. A young activist who’s only crime is defending the liberty of others in Hong Kong. Today for his courage he’s been punished with 10 years in prison by the Chinese Communist Party. He could have run. He could have lived in exile. He chose courage.

Wow. @KemiBadenoch says she will NOT visit China while Jimmy Lai (the British citizen she is referring to) remains in prison.
🆕 Tory Leader Kemi Badenoch asked if she would visit Xi Jinping in Beijing says she won't be going for as long he is locking up British dissidents.

How many more innocent Iranians must be killed by the Islamic Republic before the world acts? How many more families must mourn their loved ones? The cycle of impunity continues as human rights are sacrificed to geopolitics and partisanship.
🔴The death sentences of #AmirhosseinMaleki and #AmirhosseinEbrahimi, both 20 years old and arrested during the January 2026 protests in Isfahan, were carried out at dawn on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan. 🔸Amirhossein Ebrahimi has been identified as a medical student. The families of both prisoners were summoned to the prison for a final visit one day before their executions. The two men were among the defendants in the case known as the “Alikhani Square case” in Isfahan, which was opened following the deaths of four members of the Special Forces and Basij during protests on January 8, 2026. 🔸They faced charges including moharebeh (“waging war against God”), efsad-e fel-arz (“corruption on Earth”), baghi (“armed rebellion”), and “collaboration with the enemy,” and were sentenced to death. 🔸Death sentences were issued against 12 individuals in this case. With the executions of Amirhossein Maleki and Amirhossein Ebrahimi, the number of people executed in connection with the case has risen to nine. 🔸According to reports, Amirhossein Ebrahimi was riding his motorcycle to his grandmother’s home when he passed through an area where protests were taking place. He was later identified and arrested through mobile phone tracking. Reports also indicate that he was subjected to physical and psychological torture and pressure during interrogation to extract a confession. 🔸No independently verified information has been made public regarding the circumstances of the interrogations, how statements were obtained, whether the two prisoners had effective access to legal counsel, or whether international fair trial standards were upheld.

“Jimmy Lai and Joshua Wong carried Hong Kongers’ voices to the world and inspired many to stand up for freedom. Today, Beijing is punishing them for it.” Tonight, at the Lincoln Memorial, @Frances_Hui joined @NEDemocracy and the October 30 Coalition to mark the International Day of Political Prisoners, speaking about two Hong Kongers from different generations who are paying the same price for freedom. Jimmy Lai fled Communist China at 12 and built a life in Hong Kong defending the freedom it gave him, founding Apple Daily to give Hong Kongers a voice. Now 78, he has spent nearly six years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, and was sentenced to 20 years in February. Joshua Wong, who rose to prominence as a teenage activist, turned 30 this month, spending his sixth birthday in a row behind bars, and he now faces another sentence for his international advocacy. They have not given up on Hong Kong, and we must not give up on them.
