If I could give just one thing to spiritual/religious Twitter/X it would be the 'view pill'. #PracticeWithInformedConsent
Meditation methods come with worldviews. If you don't know their view, it's difficult to see if they lead in the directions you desire. If you're blindly practicing methods with different views, it's hard to see if they're complimentary or contradictory.

Being open & interested in the whole situation doesn't mean we drop our preferences, tastes, or discernment. It just means we are in relationship with what is actually happening. It requires accepting risk, taking responsibility, and thrives on humility. But it's worth it...

People who step into this way of being wield tremendous power. Their choice not to retreat into naive nightmares or utopian fantasies allows them to show up, fight for the messy totality, and radically transform themselves & the world in the process.

When problems arise, the common human response is to distinguish good from bad, then work to destroy or banish the bad. With maturity, we learn that this only takes us so far, is ultimately futile, and that good & bad are frustratingly inseparable. Luckily, better options exist!

We can relate to the entire situation as workable: the horrific, the beautiful, the mundane, the unknown. When we do this, we drop the good/bad blinders and see everything in the situation as saying something important about where we find ourselves. And I mean everything...

When I was a teenager, I had a lovely chocolate Labrador Retriever. She loved her food. We kept a big bad of dog food in the pantry. One day, we came home. She had gotten into the pantry, eaten about 10 pounds of dog food, and vomited all over the kitchen. There are many second-order consequences she did not foresee, with no maliciousness. A dog might be able to learn the impact of eating that much food. But probably won't learn that a human goes off and purchases the food. For them, the food is just "magical manna" that appears. Occasionally, like my beloved pet, you encounter humans who, with no maliciousness, simple can't cognize second-order consequences, and, also, as any person does, desire maximal freedom. This is simply an unsolvable political riddle: how to give people maximal freedom when the exercise of that freedom is destructive, and they are unable to cognize such second-order effects and incorporate them into their decisions.

You don't have to have an excuse for wanting life, humanity, civilization to continue. You don't have to couch it in a redemptive vision of human potential or a story about how we're cosmically special beings. You can just want it, whole-heartedly, without extrinsic justification

Awareness.
Practice it, and it gets ever trickier. Control it, and you get in trouble. Ignore it, and it comes after you. Live it, and it takes care of itself.

Hard to imagine a more timely theme than yearning for a mythical father's homecoming. Such a catharsis should be in the aesthetic language contemporary young men already know and understand. The Odyssey is a timeless heroic fantasy. It's fine that Nolan makes it look like one.
The new trailer for Christopher Nolan's ‘THE ODYSSEY’ has been released. In theaters on July 17.

I do not like the pejorative in the Three Poisons (Attachment, Aversion, Ignoring). Instead: the valence neutral Three Involvements: Emphasizing, De-emphasizing, and Setting Aside. They become poisons only when they arise as compulsory, and not when liberated from compulsion.
