Day one of SEAL training. I'm a skinny kid, totally intimidated, trying to figure out which way is up. 😅
And there's this guy strutting around like he already made it, poking people in the chest, going "80% attrition rate. You're not gonna be here. You're not gonna be here." Then he gets to me: "Hey Skinny, you ain't gonna be here."
A few weeks later, that big-mouthed guy was gone. Week one.
Guess who made it? The skinny guy he poked in the chest.
Be humble. Focus on relentless action.
I'm not a shit talker, never have been.
I know some of you love it, and sure, there's a time and place to get in your opponent's head. But what I've seen in combat, business, and sports is this: the people who talk the most eventually lose, fail, or fall, and every bit of trash talk gets punched right back in their face.
Stop talking. Start grinding. Let your results do the talking.
Less talk. More action. 🔱

At Ranger School, I learned that composure could look like singing a ridiculous song while instructors tried to get under my skin.
I had returned to training after spending a month in a holding company. During my first attempt, I had reacted badly whenever the Army instructors mocked the Navy or called me “Squid.” Their comments became personal because I made them personal.
This time, when I stood on a platform above a lake and the instructors demanded that I sing, I took a breath and gave them an off-color SEAL drinking song. They laughed. I moved on to the next task.
Nothing about the environment had changed. The difference was that I had stopped handing other people control of my reaction.
Leaders get tested this way every day, although the setting usually looks different. It may be a sharp comment in a meeting, a skeptical question from the board, or criticism delivered in a way you do not appreciate. The fastest way to lose the room is to let irritation make the decision for you.
Composure is not pretending the pressure is gone. It is deciding that the pressure will not choose your response.
That day at Ranger School, taking one breath and playing along showed more control than any angry comeback could have.

🇺🇸 INNOVATION. INTEGRATION. BETTER OUTCOMES FOR OUR VETERANS! 🇺🇸
This morning, I had the honor of attending the VA’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) launch at the Cleveland VA, marking another important step forward for veterans across Ohio! The VA also launched in Alaska today!
One of the biggest challenges our veterans face is navigating disconnected systems, outdated processes, and mountains of paperwork. The VA’s continued focus on integrating and automating electronic health records is an important step toward making that process faster, easier, and more efficient.
This mission aligns closely with what we’re building at TurboVets.
While the VA is working to modernize and unify veterans’ medical records, TurboVets is focused on automating and integrating military service records, benefits processes, and numerous other systems designed to help service members and veterans successfully navigate life during and after military service.
Different systems. Shared mission. BETTER OUTCOMES FOR OUR VETERANS! 🇺🇸
👏 A special shoutout to Jill Dietrich Mellon, who delivered some excellent remarks and continues to provide outstanding leadership on the EHR rollout in Ohio while supporting efforts in other states.
👏 VA Deputy Secretary Lawrence also delivered powerful comments about the importance of innovation, integration, and creating a unified system that will ultimately serve our veterans faster and better.
But I have to admit…
🎸🇺🇸 THE GUY WHO STOLE THE SHOW WAS JASON!
Jason, who works at the Cleveland VA, absolutely CRUSHED an electric guitar rendition of our National Anthem! 🎸🔥
I’m talking goosebumps, American pride, and a whole lot of FREEDOM!
MURICA!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Congratulations to the entire Cleveland VA team and everyone working to bring these innovations to our nation’s veterans.
When we break down barriers, connect systems, and put veterans FIRST, everybody wins.

One of the most important lessons I share with audiences is also one of the easiest to skip: The first person you have to lead is yourself.
People usually want to talk about leading teams, changing culture, or getting an organization through adversity. Those things matter. They also depend on whether the person in charge can manage his or her own ego, preparation, emotions, and follow-through.
Self-leadership shows up in your everyday decisions. Personally, Professionally, and Physically. Do you prepare when nobody is checking? Can you receive hard feedback without becoming defensive? Do you keep the commitments you made after the energy of the meeting wears off?
That is why I focus on personal accountability when I speak to corporate teams.
A stronger culture is built by people who can lead themselves consistently before they ask everyone else to follow them as leaders.
I am booking 2027 leadership meetings, sales kickoffs, and conferences now.
If your organization is working through change, rebuilding momentum, or raising its leadership standard, that is a conversation I would be glad to have.

I have one superpower: I can get my a$$ kicked like nobody else. 👊
Guys... I'm not the best fighter. Not the smartest. Not the prettiest.
But I can get knocked down and keep getting back up like a champ.
I've been doing it my whole life. Shot. Stabbed. 40 surgeries. You name it.
But here's what I've learned, especially these last few weeks: physical toughness and emotional toughness are two completely different things. And emotional toughness is so much harder.
It's the invisible wounds that carry the deepest impact.
Losing a teammate. Carrying guilt. Losing someone you love.
I've been processing my own invisible wound lately... losing my best friend, Kharma.
And I'll be honest, this one hit different.
You can run 100 miles. You can lift 10,000 pounds.
You can get your ass kicked and get back up every time.
But if you can't overcome the invisible, emotional wounds, you're going to get stuck on that X.
So build your emotional resilience the same way you'd build physical toughness.
Get up. Get off the X. Drive forward.
It doesn't stop hurting completely, but with time, it gets easier to carry.
Get up and overcome. 🇺🇸

When companies bring in a former Navy SEAL, they probably only expect stories about elite performance, high-stakes missions, and overcoming impossible odds.
Don't get me wrong, guys; I talk about all of those things. BUT, I also talk about the times I got leadership wrong (spoiler alert, there were some big ones!).
That is intentional.
Most audiences do not need another speaker pretending leadership is a clean climb toward success. They need an honest look at what happens when ego clouds judgment, communication breaks down, or a high performer loses the trust of the team.
Those are the stories people recognize in their own organizations.
They create better conversations because nobody has to pretend the hard parts do not exist.
I have learned that vulnerability from a leader does not lower the standard. It gives people a clearer path toward meeting it by leading yourself first.
That is the kind of room I want to help create when I speak.
What setbacks became big successes for you?

I once mistook somebody else’s expertise for a threat to my authority.
During a mission in Afghanistan, I was responsible for organizing our extraction. I assumed the same helicopters that dropped us off would come back for us, so I built the plan around the wrong aircraft.
Then Senior Chief Mike Peters arrived and started changing everything. Mike was our aviation expert. He knew exactly what needed to happen. Instead of welcoming his help, I felt undermined and pushed back.
Looking back, his expertise was never the problem.
My insecurity was.
I was so worried about appearing unprepared that I resisted the person who could help us build a better plan. In trying to protect my authority, I damaged it.
Strong leaders know where their knowledge ends. They ask questions, seek counsel, and give subject-matter experts room to do what they do best.
Who on your team knows more than you about the problem in front of you? Are you using that strength or competing with it?

Trauma does not care where you served.
That was one of the messages I shared recently at Operation Yellow Tape’s fifth annual conference in Chesterfield, Virginia. The event brought first responders, combat veterans, and their families together for an honest conversation about mental health and the stigma that still keeps too many people from asking for help.
The protector community understands teamwork. We train together, serve together, and depend on one another when the pressure is highest. Yet when the battlefield moves inside our own minds, too many people still try to fight alone.
Kenny Mitchell and the Operation Yellow Tape team are working to change that culture. I was honored to stand alongside them, and the LHA (who spoke on stage with me about our book and our mission), my friends at Tactical 21, and remind the room that trauma is trauma, whether it comes from the battlefield, the fire service, or law enforcement. It's how we get off the X and drive forward that truly matters.
There are too many of us to ever feel alone.

Are you a glass-half-full person, or a glass-half-empty person? 🥛
Last month, my grandson was born. My daughter planned every detail of a home birth for months. And then everything went wrong.
48 hours of labor. An emergency hospital transfer. An epidural she never wanted. 15 more hours of labor. A fever. Red flags everywhere. Emergency C-section. The cord wrapped around his neck 3 times. A NICU stay. A bacterial scare that sent them straight back to the hospital hours after finally coming home.
None of it went according to plan.
And my daughter never once focused on what went wrong. She focused on one thing: her son was healthy.
That's a mindset, guys. That's the Overcome Mindset.
I think about this with my own journey too: wounded in combat, 40 surgeries, an arm that doesn't fully work anymore. I don't focus on the negative. I focus on the fact that I'm here to hold my grandson, something some of my brothers never got the chance to do.
Negativity keeps you stuck. Gratitude moves you forward.
If your plan falls apart, there are still lessons and blessings hidden in the wreckage, if you're willing to look for them.
Proud of you, Sierra. You and Ian crushed it. 🙏

Amazing time in Tampa last week with the MIC community! 🇺🇸
Honored to meet and speak with SO many incredible people making an impact in the military community.
The conversations ranged from leadership and resilience to the work still ahead for veterans, families, and the organizations supporting them.
These discussions matter because progress usually starts when people from different backgrounds get in the same room and get honest about what is working, what is not, and where they can help.
Thank you for having me speak, for allowing me the opportunity to spread my message, and to teach other veterans to do the same. Even broke the tux out for this one.

Virginia 🇺🇸, this one’s for you.
I’m honored to host an Exclusive Dinner and Fireside Chat with Congresswoman Jen Kiggans on Wednesday, October 14th, in Chesapeake, VA.
This isn’t about politics as usual. This is about showing up for leaders who show up for us. Leaders who understand service, sacrifice, and putting country above self.
Event Details:
📅 Wednesday, October 14th
⏰ VIP Reception 5 PM - Event starts at 6:00 PM
📍 Chesapeake, VA (location provided upon RSVP)
Tables and tickets here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…
Come meet Congresswoman Kiggans directly. Ask your questions. Have real conversations. Be part of the process instead of just complaining about it from the sidelines.
This is what civic engagement looks like. Not just voting every few years, but showing up, engaging, and holding our leaders accountable in person.
Spots are limited, so don’t wait.
See you there, Virginia. 🇺🇸

Before I speak to a team, I want to know one thing: What is the X?
The X is the point where progress stopped. It might be a reorganization nobody has fully accepted, a sales team that has lost confidence, a leadership group avoiding a hard decision, or a company trying to regain momentum after a difficult year.
If I understand that, I can make the message useful to the people in the room. The stories may come from the SEAL Teams, combat, recovery, or business, but the goal is to help that audience recognize where it is stuck and decide how to move.
That is why the best keynote conversations start before anyone walks onstage. The more honest a company is about the challenge, the more practical we can make the session.
I am building out my 2027 corporate calendar now. If your team has an X it needs to move through, let’s talk about it.

Every fall I do the same thing - pull out my 72-hour go bag and make sure EVERYTHING is ready if the worst happens. Here's what's inside:
💧 Water - the #1 priority (you can go weeks without food, only 72 hours without water)
🧥 Warmth - hypothermia can take you out faster than you think
🍫 Food & emergency protein bars
🔪 Defense & survival gear - firearm, extra mags, fixed blades, tomahawk
🗺️ Maps & fallback location my family already knows
But the MOST critical thing in this bag? My @uscca app.
It shows me reciprocity, state carry laws, ammo regulations, and if something ever happens, I can instantly tap a button for help.
If you're not doing a readiness reset at least once a year, you may not be ready when it counts.

One of the fastest ways to change your future? Change who you associate with. 🚩
Let that sink in.
Here's what I see over and over... including in myself. Red flags show up. We see them clearly. We talk ourselves out of them because a few good things are mixed in. And 99% of the time, those red flags come back to bite us.
Warren Buffett said it best: "Pick colleagues whose behavior is better than yours, and you'll naturally drift in that direction."
Choose colleagues and mentors wisely. Look for people further along than you. Spend time with them. Learn from them. I'm doing this right now in my own business, deliberately positioning myself around people who've already been where I'm trying to go.
Ask yourself: are the people around you pushing you to level up? Or are you settling and holding each other back?
Choose wisely. In relationships. In business. In friendships. In life.

I once came close to drowning because I missed one step.
During a night parachute jump off the Virginia coast, I was so focused on figuring out the wind that I forgot to release the chest strap on my harness. I hit the water, released the straps at my hips, and discovered I was still attached to a parachute the wind had just caught.
It dragged me through the water. Every time I fought my way up for a breath, I went right back under.
The thing that got me out was slowing my thinking down. I ran through the procedure, found the step I'd missed, and worked the strap free. Then I realized my legs were tangled in the parachute lines, so I dealt with those one at a time until the boat reached me.
I tell that story in ‘The Trident’ because I made the mistake. Training helped me recover from it, but being out of practice had put me there in the first place.
I think about that when leaders tell me their team knows what to do in a crisis. Maybe they do.
When was the last time they practiced it under pressure?

Drop a 🇺🇸 below if you believe our stories still matter.
Right now I'm at MIC in Tampa, surrounded by some of the most powerful voices in the military and veteran community - warriors turned storytellers, all gathered for one reason: to make sure our stories, our sacrifices, and our brothers and sisters are never forgotten.
This is what Freedom Friday means to me this week.
Freedom isn't just what we fought for overseas. It's the platform we now have to speak truth, honor sacrifice, and remind the next generation why this country is still worth fighting for.
Being in a room full of veterans who traded their uniforms for microphones, cameras, and keyboards, all carrying the same mission forward on a different battlefield, is a powerful thing to witness.
We didn't stop serving. We just changed our weapons.
To every warrior out there right now: Keep telling the stories. Keep honoring the fallen. Keep reminding people what freedom actually costs.
Drop your 🇺🇸 below if you believe these stories need to keep being told.

When I speak to a company, I want people to leave with something they can use on a random Tuesday morning.
A good story can get a room's attention. I've got stories from the SEAL Teams, from being wounded in Iraq, and from rebuilding my life and career afterward. But the point of telling them is to help people look at the challenges sitting in front of them now. Build stronger teams. Learn how to lead THEMSELVES.
Sometimes that's a leader who needs to own a mistake or a team that's stuck waiting for the perfect plan.
It could also be an organization trying to move forward after a hard year.
I want people talking with each other about what they will do next, long after I've left the stage.
That's the conversation I prepare for when I walk into a sales kickoff, leadership meeting, or conference.
If you're planning a 2027 event, I'd love to hear what your team is working through.

"Attention all who enter here: If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere."
That sign changed my life.
When I was lying in that hospital bed, wounded, disfigured, and staring down a recovery no one thought I'd survive - I had a choice. Let the pain define me, or decide right then and there how my story was going to be told.
I chose to overcome.
That sign wasn't just words on paper. It was a declaration. A mindset. A refusal to be a victim in my own story.
Everyone faces their own version of that hospital room. Maybe it's not combat wounds - maybe it's a divorce, a diagnosis, a failure, a loss. But the principle is the same: You get to decide how you respond.
Overcome isn't a moment. It's a decision you make every single day when things get hard.
