Australia doesn't have a "revenue problem." We have a corporate capture problem, and we've been trained to think about govt finances in a way that's been shaped by and serves vested interests at the expense of the public interest.

If technology allows us to produce more with less labor, why should the alternatives be unemployment or precarious work? We can discuss shorter working hours, lifelong learning, income security and a #JobGuarantee. Algorithms do not decide the future of work. We do.

Replying to @TheGreenParty
@TheGreenParty, for the sake of our futures can you stop saying ‘raise taxes to pay for…’ Tax removes money from the economy - it doesn’t ‘fill government coffers’. Multiple crises have arrived because our political parties do not understand this. For all our sakes, be better.
It is time to cut tax breaks for big tech and use it to fund warmer homes. Here's our policy to lower energy bills, explained in 30 seconds.

People do not, cannot, create money. They can borrow it, after a bank has created it. Banks can only create money (they don’t lend deposits) because the state licences them to do so. The state also creates the money it spends: it does not spend taxes. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

The question here is - does Rachel actually know she's talking complete nonsense or does she believe it? Money that doesn't exist?? Issuing public or private credit creates money, a fact confimed by that wacky fringe anarcho-commie organisation called the Bank of England.
“Next year he actually has to find the money that doesn’t exist.” “There are things the Government can do that aren’t just about tax.” Rachel Wolf, who co-wrote the 2019 Conservative manifesto and Paul Nowak, TUC General Secretary, discuss the challenge facing Andy Burnham’s government, ahead of next week’s Budget #Newsnight

There is no food in Gaza, no shelter in Gaza. There is no water in Gaza, no cease fire in Gaza. No medicine in Gaza. And the world's leaders are doing nothing. The West Bank is in lockdown. And the world governments are debating 'antisemitism'. Help me understand.

I hope normie Dem voters finally understand how complicit the Democratic Party is in the destruction of the US. They won't fight for anything we need (M4A, GND, living wage, no $ to Israel, strong unions...) just a pathetic slop of nothing as we head towards full fascism
.@SenBrianSchatz says that if Democrats take the Senate, the party's left wing needs to be strategic about not proposing things "that the president of the United States is guaranteed to veto." "If we want to be more aspirational, if we want to make more bold policy changes... that's for 2028."

Israelis are spying on all of us, our media, our government and anyone criticising Israel. Israelis are the national security threat to Australia, not Iran ffs!
Scoop: ABC has wiped staff devices exposed to malicious ads from an Israeli company that used digital advertising to hack and track devices without a click. ABC is just one of many Australian government/critical infra/media orgs reportedly targeted

It’s worth clarifying something as folks are sharing news of the West Bank being “shut down”. Importantly, it is not the entire West Bank which is shut down—it is Palestinian cities, towns, and villages. Settlers are free to travel through open roads and checkpoints, as always.

Caring for the elderly, restoring ecosystems: "Not profitable” Manufacturing artificial needs and destroying the planet: “Job creation” Under capitalism, private profit decides what work is worth doing. MMT's Job Guarantee challenges that logic: jobs for public purpose.

You’d never know by this post that the five Israelis are armed IDF soldiers. But they made sure to tell you the Palestinians were definitely the bad guys. Tried, convicted, and sentenced in one headline.

I get the importance of covering these incidents. I get the importance of films like NAZA. But it is galling, deeply galling, that the carnage inflicted on Palestinians for eighty years is consistently narrated (if at all) as if props or background to Jewish reckonings, Jewish moral dilemmas, Jewish political diversity, and so on. Heidi Levine is an American-born Jewish colonizer based in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where she and her entire family live as settlers on colonized land. She got a tiny dose of what Palestinians suffer daily, and it's major news. And clearly it's not because she's a journalist, because we see the dearth of reporting on Palestinian journalists who've been decimated.
Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine recounts how Israeli colonists assaulted and robbed her while she was reporting on olive harvest in the occupied West Bank. The attack, which involved kicking and blows from clubs, left her with multiple broken bones.

Amen to this! They have forgotten that they missed the biggest economic event since the Great Depression, which they also didn’t see coming. And now they’re arrogantly telling those of us who did how economics should be done!
To me, orthodox economists exist to protect the status quo and are flat out clueless when it comes down to understanding money. On topics such as taxes, inflation, interest rates, deficits, unemployment they've been consistently wrong and then doubling down on it. Their arrogance is on another level but these are the same people who couldn't foresee the GFC of 2007-2008 or even the dot com bubble/recession of 2000-2001. Also, orthodox economists suffer from a terrible lack of accountability, pushing policies for decades that have put America in the position it's in today. Truly pathetic and unfortunate.

The fatal challenge to heterodox economics is that there isn't actually orthodox economics. Just take a few recent Nobels: behavioral, information failure, institutions, bubbles, financial fragility, labor monopsony (sort of), Schumpeterian creative destruction, etc. Not to mention RCTs which are emblematic of how much economic research is empirical and only lightly if at all structural. The real difference is methods. Heterodox economics is an avowedly political project not a social scientific effort to better understand the world. And I have nothing against political projects just shouldn't confuse the two.

“Governments must manage their finances like households". Great. Now find a household that issues the currency, levies taxes, and has a central bank. MMT doesn't deny economic constraints. It denies that household analogies explain monetary systems.
