“With targeted early intervention in Grade 1, we can remove a dyslexic child’s designation of dyslexia.”🎤 Shouldn’t this be EVERY school districts goal?? Instead of waiting until they’re in grade 3 for an assessment, a year later for a Tier 3 intervention program like Empower, which is not enough to close the gaps that have been allowed to widen over 4,5,6 years and then thrown back into the classroom without the supports that allowed them to be successful. Very inspiring presentation from @CunninghamPsych at the @researchEDCan today! A good reminder of what so many teachers already know- waiting doesn’t work!!!!

I need to repost this as Anita Archer's keynote yesterday at ResearchEd Toronto discussed the convergence of the three sciences.
This is seriously my favorite book I've read in my 26-year professional career. I read this book in one day, taking copious notes throughout. The author, Paige Pullen contends that effective literacy instruction requires insights from three complementary knowledge bases: Literacy science Learning science Instructional science This book is pure brilliance. I honestly hope it sells a million copies. This should be a core academic book in every school of education AND one that should be read by every single educator out there. It really is that good!

Someone shot a surprisingly realistic Jeep-style ad using nothing but a toy car and an iPhone. The funniest part is how close it looks to a real commercial; it is a reminder that creativity beats budget more often than we admit.

Chris Fowler shares a must-listen message on coaching and why it's more than just a profession. "You have been nasty and irrational and deeply personal in your criticism of coaches from time to time. If you're a sports fan, I guarantee it. I've certainly been guilty." "But do you know why coaches choose that as a profession in the first place?" "Almost every single one of them - because they want to help people learn, grow, and improve as people and as athletes. I promise you, that's why they get into it." "Coaching is a calling more than a profession. Lee Corso taught me that a long time ago." It's one of the greatest examples of being a servant leader. It's pouring yourself into the growth of other people. "You have to have what it takes to pour yourself into others in order to make a difference. Not everybody can do that." "Yes, they're accountable for the wins and losses. But consider that so much of that is actually beyond their control. You're accountable for it. You're responsible for it. How much do you really control it?" "Know the grind. What each and every coach at whatever level puts into it - whether you're a coach in Little League or AAU or high school - what they put into that is so demanding on them and their loved ones." The sacrifices are invisible and the criticism is public. "Consider them as human beings when you rip into them." "I promise you, at their heart, they just wanna help people. That's the greatest joy they get out of it." Coaching is a calling. The wins feel good. But watching someone become who they're capable of becoming that's why they do it. (🎥@cbfowler)

I have been listening to the new season of Sold a Story and I love the focus on the science of learning in all subjects, not just reading. While the idea of direct instruction may be new to some people, for many others, it confirms what we’ve always known. Direct instruction is a more effective approach to teaching. As someone who has followed the work of Dr Daniel Willingham, Zach Groshell, Carl Hendrik, and Paul Kirchner for many years, this new podcast confirms what they have always said. What matters is not just what we teach, but HOW we teach. @ehanford @DTWillingham @C_Hendrick @New_Old_Paul @MrZachG #DirectInstruction
